It's still September.
But I'm already convinced that Drefong(USA) will be a major stallion in Japan.
He added four winners this weekend moving to the top of the JRA 2yo sire-ranking (of all stallions)!!
The son of Gio Ponti has had ten individual JRA winners to date, from 1200m to 1800m, on either surface.
Do you think a Japanese stud farm will try to get Gio Ponti? He has not done particularly well here and I doubt he got very many mares this year. I don't think Castleton Lyons would want to sell him (but you never know). However, a lease with him set up to return to the US when he's pensioned seems reasonable.

If only Gio Ponti was a bit younger...

Drefong's success should prompt Japanese stud farms to introduce more US-based dirt champions who have the tremendous speed and the power.
They may especially be interested in the Storm Cat-line going forward.
But I don't imagine that many will want a stallion over 16 years-old whose stud records have not been particularly brilliant.
A lease must be more feasible but .....
It looks like Yoshida prefers conventional-dirt performers to turf (and/or AW) specialists, when they recruit stallions from the US.
Then Dr Yusa at JBBA?

Yeah, it doesn't seem like he would be the type that Shadai would go for and he's getting older. We'll see what happens! Do you expect to see Mind Your Biscuits do as well with his first crop? He is a similar type to Drefong as a dirt sprinter, although obviously an entirely different sireline.

Interesting!!

Yes, I think that MYB's babies will run well, too, even if can hardly expect the same degree of success as Drefong.
Both stallions stands at Shadai Stallion Station, the only stud division of the Shadai Group.
But their starting lines were somewhat different.
While Drefong was introduced by Katsumi Yoshida, MYB was introduced by Teruya Yoshida.
Accordingly, the biggest supporter for Drefong was Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm and the biggest supporter for MYB was Teruya Yoshida's Shadai Farm.
It's Northern Farm that has the best broodmare band and the best pre-training facilities for the yearlings in Japan now.
But we'll see what happens next year when MYB's fist crop make debuts!
Can MYB be the new flag-bearer for the Deputy Minister-line in Japan after Kurofune(USA) passed away?

Okay, that makes a lot of sense and you can see how Drefong would have an advantage. Remind me, are Teruya and Katsumi brothers?

Teruya is the eldest son of Zenya Yoshida and Katsumi is the second son (and Haruya is the third son).
It was Teruya who found Northern Taste at Saratoga Yearling Sale in 1972.
Also Teruya played a key roll in introducing Sunday Silence for Zenya.
It looks like Teruya is always enjoying the racing and the breeding as if he was a kid.
But it now looks like Katsumi is a better business owner.
It's often said that Katsumi is a realist.
Both are great horsemen who love horses, of course!

Okay, trying to file all this away so I don't forget. I've always had trouble keeping the Yoshida family straight! Is Dr. Naoya Yoshida from Winchester Farm here in the US related to them?

The Paulick article doesn't say what caused his death. Any info available elsewhere? :(

Not really.
Dr. Naoya Yoshida is very remotely related to the Yoshida family of the Shadai Group.
His great-grandfather Gontaro Yoshida, the founder of Yoshida Bokujo**, was the younger brother of Zentaro Yoshida.
Zentaro Yoshida was the grandfather of Zenya Yoshida...(I'm sure you have a headache now.. haha!)
But Naoya Yoshida's Winchester Farm have no relationship with the Shadai Group's operation.

** Yoshida Bokujo used to be a distinguished owner/breeder in Japan.
They had such champions as Ryuzuki, Ten Point, Pretty Cast, Fujiyama Kenzan etc, but ceased operation last year.

Thank you for this. So they are cousins, but distant ones. I've learned something new today!

We Miss Artie does not show up on the Mares Bred list for 2020 but I am hopeful to see how many for 2021. He has quite a few stakes horses from very little runners overall.

He did cover mares in 2020 they just must have been late submitting the report so it didn't show up on the list. It should show when they do the 2020 breeding/2021 foaling list.

Basin retired to Spendthrift.

I feel like $7500 is high for what he did on the track but I'm not a breeder.

G2W Battleground (War Front x Found) to Turkey.

MG1W Epaulette (Commands x Accessories) to Turkey.

Epaulette has been in Australia for a few years but it sounds like he's been sold completely and will not shuttle.

Funky that Hootenanny's first winner is a Louisiana-bred that won in the UK.

Dominus is still on Spendthrift's website, but on stallion register is listed as standing at Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm in OH for 2022. So....
