Drefong(USA)(Gio Ponti) sired his first group winner from his first crop, when his 2yo colt Geoglyph(JPN) [o/o Aromatico(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN)], won impressively under Christophe Lemaire the G3 Sapporo Nisai Stakes 1800m turf at Sapporo on Sep 4th 2020.
Sodashi had won this race last year.

It's still September.
But I'm already convinced that Drefong(USA) will be a major stallion in Japan.
He added four winners this weekend moving to the top of the JRA 2yo sire-ranking (of all stallions)!!
The son of Gio Ponti has had ten individual JRA winners to date, from 1200m to 1800m, on either surface.

Do you think a Japanese stud farm will try to get Gio Ponti? He has not done particularly well here and I doubt he got very many mares this year. I don't think Castleton Lyons would want to sell him (but you never know). However, a lease with him set up to return to the US when he's pensioned seems reasonable.

But I'm already convinced that Drefong(USA) will be a major stallion in Japan.

Do you think a Japanese stud farm will try to get Gio Ponti? He has not done particularly well here and I doubt he got very many mares this year. Drefong's success should prompt Japanese stud farms to introduce more US-based dirt champions who have the tremendous speed and the power.
They may especially be interested in the Storm Cat-line going forward.
But I don't imagine that many will want a stallion over 16 years-old whose stud records have not been particularly brilliant.
A lease must be more feasible but .....
It looks like Yoshida prefers conventional-dirt performers to turf (and/or AW) specialists, when they recruit stallions from the US.

Yes, I think that MYB's babies will run well, too, even if can hardly expect the same degree of success as Drefong.
Both stallions stands at Shadai Stallion Station, the only stud division of the Shadai Group.
But their starting lines were somewhat different.
While Drefong was introduced by Katsumi Yoshida, MYB was introduced by Teruya Yoshida.
Accordingly, the biggest supporter for Drefong was Katsumi Yoshida's Northern Farm and the biggest supporter for MYB was Teruya Yoshida's Shadai Farm.
It's Northern Farm that has the best broodmare band and the best pre-training facilities for the yearlings in Japan now.
But we'll see what happens next year when MYB's fist crop make debuts!
Can MYB be the new flag-bearer for the Deputy Minister-line in Japan after Kurofune(USA) passed away?

It looks like Teruya is always enjoying the racing and the breeding as if he was a kid.
But it now looks like Katsumi is a better business owner.

His great-grandfather Gontaro Yoshida, the founder of Yoshida Bokujo**, was the younger brother of Zentaro Yoshida.
Zentaro Yoshida was the grandfather of Zenya Yoshida...(I'm sure you have a headache now.. haha!)
But Naoya Yoshida's Winchester Farm have no relationship with the Shadai Group's operation.
