Madagascar is immediately what I thought of but I'm pretty sure it was a word before then.

I think the comparison to the misspelling of "Pharaoh" is a little unfair, especially for someone like me who honestly didn't know that American Pharoah's name was misspelled until I was told and shown otherwise! It's a pretty subtle difference....the position of the "a" and the "o".

But to leave a "D" out of the double D of "the Riddler"....making it "the Ridler".........that's just a screw-up, not an accident! At the very least, it's a failure of proofreading that should NEVER happen when registering a thoroughbred racehorse!

Yeah when I saw the headline I was like..."The Rye-dler? Is this like a really crappy pun combining The Riddler and rider?"

There was a 2005 The Riddler (by Daylami) that began racing in Europe but later won a G1 in Russia. I wonder if it was rejected because of that rather than cultural significance or copyright.

I wonder if they got the name from that "Madagascar" movie.

Just ran in the Irish War Cry at Monmouth:

STEFANO (by Giant Surprise o/o Splendored Thing by Langfuhr)

Not sure if this is where they got the name, but it clicked for me: For those who didn't grow up watching Days of Our Lives with some family member, the biggest villain on the show was the mysterious multimillionaire Stefano DiMera, nicknamed "The Phoenix" because no matter how many times they killed him, he always came back from the dead.

Kiai (First Samurai x Yell https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiai) is still the cleverest Claiborne name imo but Berate is a close second.
