Her leg doesn't look like that in the catalog. I’m surprised that an Authentic got such a high bid when he’s had 5 winners in 45/46 starters. Most other sires, and they’d suffer in the ringKatieK101 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 12:14 pm Top 11 from Session 4 (several sold for $750k and it seemed unfair to leave one of them out):

I was also shocked that a Yaupon made it into an early book - and also sold for $900,000
How do they decide what first crop sires make it into an early book?

He actually got three in book one. From what I understand first crop sires would be based on pedigree and conformation rather than a sire's offspring considering they don't have any to go off of. I've been surprised by some of the mares Yaupon got in his first few seasons at stud.Slewfan2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 12:41 pmI’m surprised that an Authentic got such a high bid when he’s had 5 winners in 45/46 starters. Of his three entered in book one, hip 219 has a very nice family and is a half-sister to two GSWs; hip 303 is half to GSW Best Actor and her 2nd dam is G1W Spun Sugar; hip 358 is a half-sister to G1W Brightwork, and her dam is a full-sister to Catch The Moon, thus putting Girvin, Midnight Bourbon, etc all underneath her 2nd dam.
Hip 571, the $900k colt, is actually in book 2. Doesn't have as much pedigree as the book 1 offerings, although his 3rd dam is G1W Flat Fleet Feet. I haven't had a good look at him but I assume his conformation must be very nice.

Hip 3051 got a very timely update; full brother to recent G1 Del Mar Futurity winner, Gaming.
Gaming sold for $40k at Keeneland September last year. I imagine his brother will sell for a little more than that
In similiar news, the half-brother to the Del Mar Debutante winner, Tenma, RNA'd for $325k yesterday.

Thank you! Yeah, those are very nice pedigrees. I guess his being by Mo doesn’t hurt, lolKatieK101 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 1:00 pmHe actually got three in book one. I was looking at pictures of the yearlings being sold yesterday and the day before and I must say a few favorites of mine were by Yaupon. They looked very pretty and with a nice conformation so it might be that.Slewfan2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 12:41 pmI’m surprised that an Authentic got such a high bid when he’s had 5 winners in 45/46 starters. They send out inspectors to look at every yearling entered in the sale, they rate them according to how they look. Consignors can try and asked to get moved to a different book. Sometimes it can work, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes its better to be the best in a later book than just an average in an early book. Or to try and get a horse they know is improving into an earlier book as opposed to a later. ofc they can't ask for all their horses to be moved so they have to be picky about what they ask. They also usually put the best rated of the first crop into the first 2 books along with the best of the big commercial established. I wish I remembered where I read an article about it. It might have been in a print version ages ago or could have been 10 years ago on the internet.Slewfan2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 12:41 pmI’m surprised that an Authentic got such a high bid when he’s had 5 winners in 45/46 starters. That’s so interesting, thank you!Flanders wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 5:54 pmThey send out inspectors to look at every yearling entered in the sale, they rate them according to how they look. They also usually put the best rated of the first crop into the first 2 books along with the best of the big commercial established. I wish I remembered where I read an article about it. Been a sneaky good sale for Nyquist. Those are his top two most expensive yearlings ever sold at auction, and his third most expensive was sold in session 1.
Charlatan's prices continue to surprise me for no reason.
I was also shocked that a Yaupon made it into an early book - and also sold for $900,000
How do they decide what first crop sires make it into an early book?
Do you think there’s something to buyer’s fatigue? That by the time the sale is nearly over, even if horses look good, they’re not going to bring high prices ? Of course it might just be that the individuals aren’t as good as the earlier ones

Different buyers buy in different books but sometimes they stick around if they know there is a horse they like that is later. Last year a horse in like session 8 sold for almost a million so its possible for high prices to come out of later sessions.Slewfan2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 7:21 pmThat’s so interesting, thank you!Flanders wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 5:54 pmThey send out inspectors to look at every yearling entered in the sale, they rate them according to how they look. What I have learned from listening to too many podcasts is that a lot of the time, syndicates or owners that are on a budget don’t even show up for some of the earlier books. If you know your budget is $50,000-$100,000, why waste your time inspecting horses with G1 relations.Slewfan2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 7:21 pmThat’s so interesting, thank you!Flanders wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 5:54 pmThey send out inspectors to look at every yearling entered in the sale, they rate them according to how they look. Also, with book 1 being so strong this year, a lot of people with middle-high budgets are going to be forced to push into book 2 and 3 to fill their orders. And then those with mid range budgets have to do the same into books 4, 5, etc.
Bloodstock agents have orders that need to be filled, pinhookers need to find horses to bring to OBS and Timonium.
Then you have trainers like Kenny McPeek who looks at literally every single horse himself and does not leave until the last horse has gone through the ring.
They may be physically tired, but they know that there’s still plenty of nice horses out there just waiting to be found!

My goodness, Kenny must need a month’s vacation after looking at thousands of horses, lol
