Not the greatest quality but you can watch. He had it rough all around. He got bumped at the start, on the first turn, and then in the stretch(I'm not quite sure if he made contact here, the jockey was steering him crazy).

IDK. Its his first time riding the Derby and a 20 horse field. Because of there being 20 horses there are going to be incidents that are unavoidable, stuff can happen in 5 horse fields that are unavoidable. There was no way to avoid the bump at the break or the incident on the first turn. He thought the hole was closing so he went outside Fierceness. Don't think it cost him anything doing that. I said steering him crazy cause it was just out of nowhere and he almost bumped another horse. I think he did well getting him through traffic from last to where he finished.Slewfan2 wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 9:09 pmOy…it feels like Curtis should not ride him againFlanders wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 9:00 pmhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOsPqRQ51mM

Yeah, I overreacted; it feels like he protected the colt & did the best he. He does have experience in huge fields a la Epsom Derby, but KY Derby is just on another level of crazyFlanders wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 9:17 pmIDK. Looking at these two new photos, I still feel like Tyler was trying to make space between his horse and FY.
Although Tessa may be right...you can just see Tyler's crop to the left of FY's head, so he may have trying to use the crop to urge SL to move back to his right. And there is not really much space between the two horses to allow use of that crop.

How is that not a foul?
Race was almost 2 seconds slower than last year's. I have not been able to find the splits to see why Fierceness folded so badly.

Forever Young is all heart I swear. Probably couldn’t have had a worse trip & where others gave up he turned it up to 11. literally. Cut him self somewhere down the line but all patched up now and wasn’t as bad as it looked. Hoovered some carrots and has a fresh back tomorrow!

In the chart (which didn't show up on Equibase, for me at least, until 2 hours after the race) it says Fierceness hopped at the start. He also hadn't raced at Churchill Downs before, so that might have been a factor. Some horses don't like the surface there.Happy Endings wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 11:26 pm

Dude was on a Twitter spaces a few weeks ago complaining about American mares being sold to Japan to breed "junk horses". I try to cut him slack since he's new, but why say something so insulting when you obviously know nothing about Japanese racing/breeding. Hopefully today was a learning experience for him.

Good thoughts. Or maybe he is not as good as projected. Time will tell. The KD is a madhouse and hard to gauge.aethervox wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 12:00 amIn the chart (which didn't show up on Equibase, for me at least, until 2 hours after the race) it says Fierceness hopped at the start. It was a contested fast 1/2 mile on a track that was pretty slow. I’m also not sure that was the trip he wanted. I also think JV wrapped up on him and took care of him when he started to drop away. A combination of factors.Happy Endings wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 12:17 amGood thoughts. Or maybe he is not as good as projected. Time will tell. I was only watching on the Jumbotron at SA but didn't Stronghold make a move on the turn? I remember being excited but he flattened out--still was 6th or 7th, not a bad finish. Very puzzled over Fierceness but pleased by the good Japanese run--maybe American breeders will realize that mares are worth more gold than they bring in the sales ring. (Wishful thinking.)
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

Agreed on all counts. Pace was fast according to Timeform, and Johnny knew there was no point in persisting with him. According to Repole he came out of the race fine. Tough race and I hope he'll be back to win some big ones.
And that photo of Tyler that I've seen circulating is from when he drew his whip out into his left hand--an attempt to get Sierra Leone to straighten. You can see it here at 1:56 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5Yb-2xEMzg
It's a bit of a weird look, but it was completely unintentional and a great example of how a photo is just one moment in time. It's very unfortunate that Forever Young took the worst of Sierra Leone's bad habits, but I don't think the outrage at Tyler is warranted.
