Still can’t believe HAP at 81....that ticks me off. I guess he’s being penalized for his sire. I expected much more, especially from LE

I took the other Kentucky stallions that went to stud in 2021, the 2nd number is their 2021 mares bred. All dropped but one, some way more than HAP. The ones that didn't drop a ton were the ones who were the speedballs and Champions. I'm sure LE would have preferred he got more mares but there is really nothing LE can do about it. They only own so many mares and have other stallions to support. Plus they are a commercial breeder so of course they are going to send their best mares to proven stallions to sell the future foals. Their other 2021 stallions also dropped and neither of their new 2022 stallions got huge books. Then they have Catalina Cruiser's whose first crop is 2yos next year, his numbers have dropped to 1/2 of what he bred his first year. And they made the deal to bring Daredevil back and he only covered 76 mares in 2022. Most stallions biggest books are going to be their first one until their foals are old enough to race.

Authentic - 202 (229)
Bravazo - 8 (22)
Caracaro - 72 (76)
Complexity - 124 (158)
Country House - 31 (58)
Echo Town - 87 (93)
Game Winner - 131 (157)
Gift Box - 77 (112)
Higher Power - 103 (152)
Honor A.P. - 81 (110)
Improbable - 157 (177)
Instagrand - 141 (190)
Maximum Security - 100 (135)
McKinzie - 171 (214)
Promises Fulfilled - 17 (61)
Rowayton - 23 (46)
Shancelot - No RMB submitted (64)
Spun To Run - 66 (119)
Thousand Words - 121 (184)
Tiz The Law - 218 (159) - only one that improved his numbers
Toms d'Etat - 89 (116)
Vekoma - 196 (222)
Volatile - 157 (181)
War of Will - 112 (143)
Yorkton - 47 (54)

Kentucky stallions with small books (I didn't include ones that I never heard of before):

Coal Front - 38
Copper Bullet - 14
Core Beliefs - 36
Country House - 31

also, Nyquist's unraced full brother, Moquest, got 23 mares in California. he's an unraced 3yo.

he sold for $650,000 as a yearling to Magnier and then resold for $12,000 last year at KEENOV.

I saw that Linchpin, a full brother to Quality Road is in Kentucky and bred 11 mares. He was unplaced in 2 starts. He had been standing in Washington covering mares from 2015-2020 and didn't cover mares in 2021. I can't find where he is in Kentucky though. 2022 was his first year in Kentucky.

Stats: 56 foals of racing age, 29 starters, 19 winners, 1 SW.

I don’t mean to blame LE...I frustrated because I don’t understand the lack of support.

Wow, this puts it in perspective. I love LE, I just worded it badly - I wasn’t trying to blame them. They’re extremely good at supporting their stallions.

Do you think that’s just a function of 2nd year sires? As to Tiz, maybe his numbers increased because Constitution is too expensive ?

i believe it has a lot to do with the fact he came in late for the 2021 season. he wasn't retired until late December/early January and i have a feeling i read somewhere he didn't start breeding until late February last year - which is why he didn't shuttle as planned -, and that would explain a smaller book then.

Its just what happens every year. Almost all stallions drop their 2nd years and continue to drop in books through their 4th, there might be a few that increase but its not the norm. Commercial breeders that sell their yearlings are on to the new stallions. Because by the time the 2nd crop reaches the sales, the first crop 2yos would already be racing and sometimes the judgement (way to early) is out already. By the time the 3rd crop reaches the auction the judgement will have been made by buyers. The only thing that changes this sometimes is if their first crop yearlings sell incredibly well.

Like Brunanas said Tiz The Law retired late, I mean still before the breeding season but he was supposed to race at 4. There could have been breeders who wanted to use him but had already signed contracts on their mares to other stallions. So it could a combination of that and Constitution's increased fee and really good progeny results and yearling auctions.
