is Into Mischief being overbred?

a while ago i took a look into Into Mischief's numbers of mares bred since he entered stud in 2009.

2009 → 61;
2010 → 44;
2011 → 54;
2012 → 50;
up until here, it's completely fine. but then:
2013 → 210;
2014 → 202 (6 in SH time);
2015 → 215;
2016 → 220 (2 in SH time);
2017 → 264 (29 in SH time);
2018 → 296 (53 in SH time);
2019 → 267;
2020 → 250 (2 in SH time);
2021 → 216;
2022 (not the final number) → 202.

now, i'm not sure if the Southern Hemisphere numbers count towards the total number of mares bred, though i'm 99% sure it does - this still leaves him with 196 in 2014, 218 in 2016, 235 in 2017, 243 in 2018 and 248 in 2020. not to mention that since 2020 (or at least in 2020) he's also being offered to QH mares, so who knows how many collections there are every year (don't think that number can be found anywhere).

i'm not sure if there's any other stallion who covers as much as he does every year, specially for this long (though a few other Spendthrift and some Coolmore stallions also have really high numbers, it seems to me that they at least get smaller book [still in the high 100s, but they don't always stick to 200 >] in between - for "lack" of interest, perhaps, but still). it's been 8 years since he covered less than 215 mares (like i said, his 2022 book is still likely not complete, i've seen updates on the JC list until ~ late December). my question to you guys is, do you agree this is just... too much? of course, there's also a big concern regarding how badly this can affect the gene pool, as now his sons are also hot in the market and three of them lead the Mares Bred list last year (Practical Joke [who also has always covered over 200 mares every year since entering stud in 2018, except for a 189 in 2020], Goldencents and Authentic). Into Mischief is terribly over at the knees and his hooves (mainly front) don't look the greatest either, and i find it hard to imagine it doesn't hurt to land on those knees 2-3x a day everyday after a cover.

would really like to hear more opinions on this.

Honestly, it is kind of the norm for top stallions that are at certain farms and under the age of 18-20 (especially Coolmore, Spendthrift, Shadai, etc). Giant’s Causeway, Uncle Mo, Lord Kanaloa, and especially Deep Impact, whose smallest book was 171 before being removed from duties due to an injury, then dying during his final season. Giant’s Causeway and Deep Impact were majorly scaled back due to wear and tear/injuries before dying at not very old ages.

It’s sad and not good for the breed, but as long as the Jockey Club continues to be spineless, profits will be put above horse welfare.

What I'd like to know is what happened sometime in 2012, in terms of his offspring performance or whatever else, that could have caused that massive explosion in book size for 2013? Goldencents was his only truly significant runner from his first crop foaled in 2010 (and he was a big one, to be sure). But he didn't start doing his real damage until he was a 3yo in 2013, so it couldn't have been him.

I'm wondering.........is 2013 the first year that Spendthrift decided to challenge Coolmore to be the biggest overbreeder on the planet?

When his first crop was 2, he had 3 SWs from 41 foals(7% SWs). Goldencents won a G3 and finished 2nd to Champion Shanghai Bobby in the G1 Champagne. Add to that Goldencents and Vyjack both won early Derby preps(before the breeding shed opened) and then G won the SA Derby and Vyjack was 3rd in the Wood Memorial. When a first crop stallion gets Derby prep winners or Derby starters, it greatly increases his book size, even partway through the breeding season.
