Resurrecting this ancient, long-forgotten thread.
2018 is Looking like Kitten’s Joy’s best year yet. This year alone, off the top of my head, he’s had:
Roaring Lion, a multiple GI winner in Europe.
Oscar Performance, a GI winner and track record setter.
Hawkbill, GI winner in Dubai.
Sadler’s Joy, GII winner and multiple GI-placed.
Have At It, stakes winner and possible runner for the BC Juvenile Turf.
Henley’s Joy, GSP stakes winner and possible runner for the BC Juvenile Turf.
Divisidero, GIII winner and GI-placed.
Linburgh’s Kitten, set a track record at Turfway Park.
And this is of course not counting what these runners did in previous years. You could also throw in Oscar Nominated, who is winless in 2018 but continues to try his best and hit the board in nice races. Just really impressive. I can’t wait to see what Hill ‘n Dale is able to do with him.

Hawkbill has been retired. I suspect that his 7th-place finish at Woodbine in the Northern Dancer spurred the decision.

Adding to KJ's SW list: 2x G2 winner Catapult and SW Lafta.

Oh my Lord, I must’ve accidentally deleted Catapult off my list. I swear I remember typing it out, lol.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 09, 2018 2:59 pm Hawkbill has been retired. I suspect that his 7th-place finish at Woodbine in the Northern Dancer spurred the decision.

Will never stop expressing my admiration for Ramsey's dedication to this stallion. I know I know, not every big stallion station has the time, money or patience to invest in a stud, but maybe the Ramseys should give a course on 'how to 'Make' a stallion'. Maybe we'd have a wider gene pool, less bottlenecks and all three founding sirelines alive and well if everyone who believed in their stallion set off to curate an extremely careful book of mares to produce the right matches and results.

A source I found said that since his progeny have been racing, Kitten’s Joy has had a runner in every Breeders’ Cup. Here’s Kitten’s Joy’s Breeders’ Cup runners for the 2018 edition.

Maybe I misread your point, but the last thing I would associate Ramsey to with regards to Kittens Joy is a 'careful book of mares'.Treve wrote: ↑Thu Oct 11, 2018 10:53 am Will never stop expressing my admiration for Ramsey's dedication to this stallion. I didn’t say quality mares. But I thought he was very peculiar about which mares he thought were a good match regardless of accomplishment or ancestry?

I remember him claiming a bunch of mares off the track specifically to breed to KJ. I had the impression he was more worried about quantity than quality.

I might be misremembering or confusing with another stallion then but I seem to recall specifically it was that Ramsey experimented with a bunch of different mares.
Again I’m not necessarily talking about quality mares but after some time he started figuring out what worked and what didn’t and then became more peculiar.
But I stress, they weren’t necessarily what most people would consider as being quality mares, just mares that fit/crossed well with KJ.

He's obviously doing the same thing with We Miss Artie (judging by their Facebook) so I'm following Artie closely.Treve wrote: ↑Sun Nov 25, 2018 2:19 pm I might be misremembering or confusing with another stallion then but I seem to recall specifically it was that Ramsey experimented with a bunch of different mares.

Let's be careful about calling him the mad genius of breeding. He claimed horses for mostly one reason....to drop them and win owner's titles at various meets. And when those claimed horses couldn't be given away by dropping them further, the fillies and mares were suddenly candidates to be bred to Kitten's Joy. For no cost to him. Then many of those mares were sold in foal. That was his 'exit' from all those claims in search of owners titles. He was a volume breeder, and figuring out favorable crosses from that shotgun approach was at best an afterthought, and in my opinion, not pre planned in any way.ThreeMustangs wrote: ↑Sun Nov 25, 2018 12:07 amI remember him claiming a bunch of mares off the track specifically to breed to KJ. LOL being blunt again, Horsebagger. But I tend to agree. I read an article years ago that quoted Ramsey saying that his formula for how he chose mares for KJ was akin to the formula for Coca Cola or something like that. It was so vague, it stuck with me.Horsebagger wrote: ↑Sun Nov 25, 2018 6:43 pmLet's be careful about calling him the mad genius of breeding. An aside, I have thought for a little while now that they should try to send Zenyatta to him. The breeding gets that doubling up on Roberto that seems to work so well in his progeny.
