I find this a bit odd. It seems like the majority of southern hemisphere racing is turf. Does he have any winners on turf at all?

jeez i wonder how many mares he will be bred to in total. i doubt he got less than 220ish this year on NH time. sure it will be year round so it's more spread out but still... i don't really like the idea of stallions breeding all year long, specially the ones with really big books like he probably had.Mylute wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 11:46 am Gun Runner to Cover Mares on Southern Hemisphere Time

Recent events have taught us that there are a whole lot of drugs being used out there of which we are unaware, as well. That probably isn't a recipe for longevity in some of these cases.Northport wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 2:54 pm The modern Thoroughbred breeding stallion doesn’t seem to live much past 23 or 24. Obviously you have your AP Indy’s and Forty Niners, but then you have your Empire Maker, El Prado, Galileo, Mastercraftsman, Kingmambo, Deep Impact, Sunday Silence, Pulpit, etc.
Maybe it’s recency bias, or I am just more personally familiar with ponies and warmbloods. Or young(er) stallions dying get more headlines.

Does anyone still think that horses 30-70 years ago weren't being given drugs or weird "supplements?"
The difference now is that the drugs being given are likely to be far better/effective in many ways. More scientific research, more controlled, sterile manufacturing (excepting that Aussie weird stuff that Fishman was peddling), and veterinarians with more modern medical training should mean that breeders/trainers/vets have pharmaceutical choices that aren't as likely to poison a horse...such as what happened with Phar Lap.
I know that greedy people may make the wrong choice for their welfare, but the horses are still better off not being dosed with what were considered standard 'tonics' back in the mid-twentieth century.

His Southern Hemisphere book will only be limited by quality. So technically if he gets a ton of top quality mares, sky's the limit. I doubt he will get a lot of SH mares though, maybe 20-30. Most breeders aren't shipping their mares around the world to get bred.brunanas wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 2:52 pmjeez i wonder how many mares he will be bred to in total. i doubt he got less than 220ish this year on NH time. sure it will be year round so it's more spread out but still... i don't really like the idea of stallions breeding all year long, specially the ones with really big books like he probably had.Mylute wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 11:46 am Gun Runner to Cover Mares on Southern Hemisphere Time

I saw that the JRA purchased a few which I found interesting. What do they do with the ones they purchase?tachyon wrote: ↑Tue Jul 26, 2022 10:21 am Sinister Minister(USA) colt topped the first day of the HBA Hokkaido Selection Sale (Yearlings) in Japan on July 26th 2022.

Dearest Trickski was bred to California Chrome in 2021, but did not produce a foal, which I was disappointed to see.

Another nail in the coffin for middle distance stallions, but he was given a lot of chances and really just hasn’t delivered. Too bad.20hayes20 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 26, 2022 11:18 am https://www.darleyeurope.com/stallions/ ... olden-horn

When John Gosden said that the Derby has become a pivotal race for determining top National Hunt stallions, he really wasn’t joking.

What is considered middle distance?

For non-American races, I feel the 'middle distance' is above a mile, but below a mile-and-five-eighths.
European runners seem to divide into sprinters (up to 7 furlongs), milers, middle distance and stayers (above 13 furlongs).
But here in the US, I've heard some TV analysts refer to a mile as 'middle distance.'

In the US we usually call 9-12f "classic distance" (at least on dirt) so calling a mile middle distance would differentiate it from sprint and classic.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 26, 2022 4:34 pm For non-American races, I feel the 'middle distance' is above a mile, but below a mile-and-five-eighths.

Europeans consider middle distance to be 10 to 12f. They have really gone off those stallions. Recent examples would be Crystal Ocean who couldn't even get a flat stallion deal and Poet's Word who barely got bred to his first year at stud and was then sent to National Hunt for his 2nd year.
