Henro [Collected x Street Minstrel] wins the Iowa Derby over Just A Touch who was a nose or head back in second. Northern Flame was 3rd.
Just A Touch really likes to be second.

Henro might be half the size of Just a Touch, but he put in a neat effort there. Just a Touch got the outside stalking trip he wanted but just couldn't separate. Not quite the move forward that it looked like he had in him earlier this year.
And speaking of horses who might have been set back by the Derby, I saw that Endlessly was last in the Belmont Derby today. A real shame--I never got the chance to post it, but I was really disgusted by Rispoli's ride in the Derby on that horse. Just whaling on him fifteen lengths back in the stretch while the horse was trying his heart out on a surface he hated. No need for that sort of crap at all, and I saw he was back on today. Bleh.

There’s no time for a prep - so no surprise that he’s going straight to the Travers. He didn’t run great in the Risen Star off a layoff, so hopefully things are different
Can the racing gods just let this colt get even a little luck?

I think he is a nice colt, just not as talented as other 3 year old sons of Goldencents, Mystik Dan and Gould's Gold.
Probably a tough decision as to where to race Mighty Message next. He has won two races including an entry level allowance race. He apparently would not be competitive in a graded stakes race. The next level allowance race at the major tracks (Saratoga, Del Mar, etc.) would be tough. I notice that older horses seem to dominate those races. It is hard to find a (N2X) race for 3yo's any more this year at the big tracks.
MM has a good trainer. It should be interesting to see where he races next.

So, where do you race a horse like Mighty Message? MM was bought for 230K last year. I am sure they don't want to put him in a claiming race, at least not yet. A graded stakes race is apparently out. A (N2X) allowance race probably is too. A 6 figure non-graded stakes race might be good if they can find a soft spot, but where is it? Anyone got any ideas?

The Ellis Park Derby next month is $250k and shouldn't be too bad since the big boys are running in WV/Haskell/Jim Dandy/Travers at that point. Or they could shorten him up to 7f in the Robert R Hilton at Charles Town with a nice $500k purse.Saban wrote: ↑Wed Jul 10, 2024 3:26 pm So, where do you race a horse like Mighty Message? Those races mentioned would be good, if MM can be competitive in them.

Mystic Dan unlikely for Travers , moved back to Keeneland. Wonder if something up with him? Says PA Derby more likely. Also STG to Jim Dandy vs Haskell which I think is a good move. https://www.drf.com/news/mystik-dan-unl ... -keeneland

Yes. At this point there aren't many. Dornoch, Fierceness, Mindframe, Tuscan Sky, Timberlake and Sea Streak. And I don't see Pletcher/Repole sending 2 horses when they could race one in the Jim Dandy.Izvestia wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 9:17 pmDornoch is going to Haskell?!?Squeaky wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 2:58 pm Mystic Dan unlikely for Travers , moved back to Keeneland. There’s a milk carton with a photo of Nysos on it. If you turn it around to the other side, you’ll find Maymun’s picture. It’s part of the Alta Dena Dairy’s, they weren’t two of the good ones series.

Ha. They do seem to disappear into the black hole of “ what could have been “ horses. Maybe a year from now we might see them again and there will be no explanation given for their absence besides “ minor issues”.
