Tonalist stud fee cut to $20,000
Tonalist, the winner of the 2014 Belmont Stakes, will stand for an advertised fee of $20,000 at Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky., during the 2018 breeding season.

The 6-year-old Tapit horse was initially advertised for $30,000 by Lane’s End when the farm announced its 2018 fees in October. He stood his debut season in 2016 for $40,000, then was advertised at $30,000 in 2017.

Tonalist’s first foals are weanlings of 2017. He was led during Kentucky’s fall mixed sale season by a $260,000 colt purchased by Burnt Milles Thoroughbreds at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

Does this reduction mean that his weanlings weren't wonderful? Or is it because there are a lot of Tapit sons standing out there now? Or both?

I don't know what they looked like but I thought his about a dozen or so weanlings that sold in Oct/Nov did pretty well. One sold for $260k but there was a low one for $7k, both were kind of outliers. I think the average was maybe about $100k, but that's a pretty small sample. This fee is probably more in line to continue to attract a good sized book of mares because, yes, the competition got harder.

Surprised to see Freud drop, given his good numbers and Sharp Azteca's success this year

I was as well, but, he's not getting any younger and this may pull some breeders in that were on the fence in regards to that.

Wonder if he is slow breeder like his older brother.
