Ishaq is by Harlan's Holiday out of a full-sister to Smarty Jones. He won his debut by 10 lengths.

He hung on to win, but something funky happened with his stride in the stretch. No word of any injury, though.

It certainly wasn’t as easy as first time out, but heavily favored ISHAQ (c, 2, Harlan’s Holiday–Elusive Momeny {Ire}, by Elusive Quality) overcame some tense moments to get the job done in Saturday’s Inaugural S. at Tampa. The St George homebred was a 10 1/4-length debut romper here Nov. 28, garnering an 86 Beyer Speed Figure and 3-5 favoritism for this first attempt against winners. Hard ridden to make the early lead, the bay doled out fractions of :22.45 and :45.45 and seemed poised to score comfortably again. But the leader’s blinkers appeared to come unfastened, and he got spooked and took several awkward steps. Formal Summation (In Summation) attempted to take advantage of Ishaq’s missteps, but the chalk dug in to hold on by a neck in 1:11.04. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0.

“Something was wrong with the blinkers down the lane, which is why he took a couple of bad steps, but I had plenty of horse to win the race,” Cotto said. “He’s a nice horse. At the eighth pole, the horse got scared and completely lost momentum, but he figured it out in two jumps. When he heard the other horses coming, he rebroke, but he couldn’t see.”

You could see the blinkers flapping as he ran down the stretch and on the gallop-out. I was pretty impressed that he mostly kept his cool through it all, and didn't totally freak out. One to follow for sure.

Cosmic One had a slow 5 fur work yesterday..wonder what is going on with him? Little setbacks? Seems like he will have a series of works where he gets faster then a long time with no works, then slow works again. I wonder if he will ever race again? How long will they keep trying?

Someone did a good job of breaking and training with Ishaq. For a two-year-old colt to trust his rider enough to keep running forward at top speed, even with his vision impaired, is really impressive. You can usually figure out if a juvy is fast before you buy him, but brave and smart can be unknown but priceless qualities.

It certainly says a lot about Ishaq's tenacity and ability to overcome adversity, particularly as a young horse.

Race 9 at Fair Grounds was won by Money Flows, a half-brother to E Dubai. Etruscan (Bernardini x Proud Spell) finished 3rd and Teniente Coronel ( half-brother to Sean Avery) was 7th.

I own a piece of the 5th place horse, Aces High, who is out of a half-sister to Point Given
