In case anyone thought Chuck Fipke wasnt already an intriguing and eclectic enough character, he almost died 3 weeks ago after being attacked by wasps in Costa Rica while bird watching after forgetting his glasses

Crazy how many farms are posting alternative contact routes on social media because of power and phone outages. I didn't realize how far spread this was.
We got pretty hard in my neck of the woods too. Several trees blocking roads and a local thrift store has its roof blown completely off and into the road. Several traffic lights were out on my route home from work. Four lane roads My mother went without power for nearly 24 hours.

I'll Have Another has a stud fee of $10,000 for 2023, up from $6,000 in 2019 (first year back in the U.S.)... If breeder reception is underwhelming, why raise his price?Mylute wrote: ↑Tue Apr 04, 2023 11:42 am J. Paul Reddam is listing his Ocean Breeze Ranch in California for sale. They raised his fee to 10k when he moved to Ocean Breeze in 2021. But he has not seen many mares at this price or really even before when it was only 6k.Gemini wrote: ↑Tue Apr 18, 2023 10:51 pmI'll Have Another has a stud fee of $10,000 for 2023, up from $6,000 in 2019 (first year back in the U.S.)... What was the point of bringing him back if no one wants to breed to him? No, his last year in Japan he only covered 47 mares. Ballena Vista then bought him, I think hoping he would be popular in California. When he wasn't, Ballena Vista then must have contacted his racing connections and said he was for sale. Because Doug O'Neill bought him, not wanting him to go back overseas, then I think gave him back to the Reddams.SukiSatsuki wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2023 8:17 pmWhat was the point of bringing him back if no one wants to breed to him? The cold hard truth is, he isn't a very good sire, he has 5 SWs, he does have an excellent 89% starters to foals of racing age and 73% winners to starters, but almost all of that is from his time in Japan(his first US crop is current 3yos and haven't done anything(he had 1 gelding finish 3rd in a Cal-bred 2yo stakes last year). There just aren't a lot of breeders in California anymore. In 2022, there were only ~1800 mares bred to 106 stallions standing in California, compare that to 20 years before in 2002 when ~5800 mares were bred to 409 stallions. IMO, they priced him out of the market for breeders that would have used him. 10k is the upper end of stud fees in California, only one stallion stands for more than 10k. They have some actually good regional sires that stand for prices that make them more attractive to breeders, Stay Thirsty(15k), Grazen(6k), Sir Prancealot(10k), Mr. Big(7.5k), plus others.

A final dispersal sale for the late New Zealand Breeder Sir Patrick Hogan will be held online next week. Some incredible pedigrees that he has carefully cultivated for generations.

I was trying to decide where exactly this article fits, its about Good Magic but more so about Stonestreet's bloodstock adviser John Moynihan. He talks about what drew him to join Stonestreet 18 years ago, a little behind the scenes, how much time they spend deciding the mating plans for the mares, how the operation has bloomed, etc. with fascinating little tidbits thrown in. Its a great article about a great operation.

I know I’ve mentioned the spending habits of Yuesheng Zhang of Yulong Stud here before, but here’s a write up on the $77,000,000AUD ($52,000,000USD) he has spent on bloodstock in the first half of 2023.
https://www.racing.com/news/2023-07-19/ ... tid=Zxz2cZ
Here’s hoping he isn’t pulling a Padua Stables, Regis Farm, Conquest Stables, etc where he spends big, only to run out of money or interest in a couple years. The sport desperately needs owners of any scope, and it could be fun to see if this spending results in big wins in the next 5, 10, 20 years.

Big news from France this week, as the last of the Wildenstein family's bloodstock (including their related Dayton Investments and Ballymore Thoroughbreds) has been purchased by the Wertheimer brothers. The Wildenstein broodmare band dates back to families they first started cultivating in 1923. Sad to see the end of the Wildenstein era, but glad the horses are staying in France and that it seems the Wertheimers have an eye on the future.
