SMARTY’S ECHO BREEZES FOR BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE
Another contender for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships was in action Saturday morning at Keeneland. The horse was Windy Hill Farm’s Smarty’s Echo, runner-up in the Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity (G1) on Oct. 5.
With E.T. Baird, who rode Smarty’s Echo in the Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity, aboard, the colt worked five furlongs in 1:00.80. Clockers caught the colt in splits of :12.20, :24.60, :37.20, 1:00.80 and out six furlongs in 1:14.40.
Anne P. Smith trains Smarty’s Echo, a son of Smarty Jones who is scheduled to make his next start in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.
The Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity marked the third start for Smarty’s Echo, who began his career at Arlington Park with a third and a win. He took the lead entering the stretch of the Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity and was passed by eventual winner We Miss Artie, who won by 2¾ lengths.
“Every race he’s learning, learning, learning,” Smith said about Smarty’s Echo. “The owners have goals to try to get a horse there (to the Breeders’ Cup), and I think this horse can compete.”
Smith, who is in her second year of training, has horses at Keeneland for the first time. Her eight runners include Windy Hill’s Grade 2 winner Nate’s Mineshaft.
Smith said Smarty’s Echo, a graduate of the 2011 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, is scheduled to work again next Saturday and travel to California the following day.

3yo filly Smart N Dreamy, one of Smarty's rare grays, got her 2nd win today at SA -- a $25000 claimer. Great ride by Talamo. She was also claimed.

There could be as many as 4 Smarties running in BC races. Old Time Hockey was pre-entered for the Marathon today; Indian Jones was supposed to be, but I haven't heard for sure. Centralinteligence, of course, won a W&I and will go in the Dirt Mile. And Smarty's Echo's connex were planning on entering him for the Juvy. The list of pre-entries will be released on Wednesday.

Jonesy Boy has a stakes future, I am sure. First race in nearly a year. He came out of his stakes race at DED with a bone chip. Real competitor. And has a record of 5-3-2-0 in his short career.Jane wrote:so glad to be back in the TBC.

Centralintelligence apparently hurt in BC Mile. Checked roughly on backstretch. Walked to the horse ambulance under his own power. Hope he will be okay.

Condylar fracture, but deemed not to be life-threatening. Indian Jones ran a gallant 5th in the Marathon, just 2+ lengths behind. Have no idea why the jock took him so far back, but he did seem to have trouble getting out of the gate. Old Time Hockey got possibly the worst ride of the day -- Craig Bernick of GHF said the jock moved about "3 furlongs early" -- a killer when the track bias is so strong.

If Old Time Hockey got the worst ride on Friday's card, I nominate jockey Baird on Smarty's Echo for the worst ride on Saturday.
When you're in the Breeder's Cup, you use top jockeys. I heard Ms Smith say that Baird knew the horse and was the best choice to ride him -- there were much better and more experienced jockeys available. Absolutely lost the race at the start. We still don't know how good Smarty's Echo might be. I think he might be a lot better than that race showed. I think the jockey let the big moment get to him.
Would like to see how Mike Smith, Gary Stevens or Bejarano would have handled Smarty's Echo.

OK, so Baird is an experienced jockey but he has had 250 starts this year with earnings of $1.2 million.
Bejarano has had almost 1,000 starts this year, with earnings more than $13 million.
This is Breeder's Cup -- you go with the best you can get.
