I haven't seen any news articles since he finished 2nd in the UAE Derby.

I haven't seen anything, but this is what Godolphin says about him in their website regarding his races to date. Note what they say about the UAE Derby. I'm thinking since they'd love to win the KD and Maftool has enough points, I would be surprised to see them skipping the race if he's healthy since they seem to think he had an excuse in UAE Derby according to this quote:

"...promising debut in Epsom maiden in July 2014, staying on well for second (behind stablemate Super Kid); won similar race at Pontefract next time time, then good second in Group 3 Sirenia Stakes at Kempton; won Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket on fourth start; struggled in the Group 1 Dewhurst at Newmarket on final start at two; below best when switched to dirt in Guineas trial at Meydan on 2015 return, but had no chance after slow start and ran promising race in the circumstances; made amends when fitted with a visor for the first time in the Group 3 UAE 2000 Guineas; couldn't confirm form with Mubtaahij in the Group 2 UAE Derby, but everything went wrong (again started slowly) and still ran on for second; stays 9.5f; acts on good and good to firm; also goes on Polytrack and dirt.

This year, horses who have enough points to make the Derby but are likely to pass include Maftool (40 points), the second-place finisher in the United Arab Emirates Derby, and Ami’s Flatter (40 points), second in the Tampa Bay Derby and third in the Florida Derby.

Maftool is “not a consideration at present,” Jimmy Bell, president of Darley USA, said on Wednesday. Maftool is owned by Godolphin Racing, which like Darley is owned by the ruling Maktoum family of Dubai. Godolphin will have a Derby starter in Frosted, the Wood Memorial winner.
