Sorry to hear about Wiseman's Ferry. When I lived in Lexington for a semester I went to several open houses at the stud farms when he was still at Castleton Lyons. And I remember I was excited to see a number of stallions in person, but the one who really struck me by surprise was Wiseman's Ferry. I thought he was one of the most handsome horses I had ever laid eyes on. Good length with excellent muscle.

For some reason I vaguely remember hearing the same thing about Tiznow.Vandalay wrote:I still loved the story one of the grooms at Claiborne told me about Ogygian,..seems he took a looong time to get "in the mood" when he was in the breeding shed, so someone suggested that he watch the breeding through the window before it was his turn...apparently it worked, and it also earned Ogygian the nickname "porno-horse"

That is interesting, he seems to get down to business fairly quickly from what I can see of him in the stall and walking out to the shed. There is less than a 10 minutes time from leaving the barn to return from the shed the times I have seen. He also looks around when returning from breeding in front of his stall, almost like he is saying "That's it? No more dates? " LOL.Calypso wrote:For some reason I vaguely remember hearing the same thing about Tiznow.Vandalay wrote:I still loved the story one of the grooms at Claiborne told me about Ogygian,..seems he took a looong time to get "in the mood" when he was in the breeding shed, so someone suggested that he watch the breeding through the window before it was his turn...apparently it worked, and it also earned Ogygian the nickname "porno-horse"
Don't know what happens in the shed itself, but he really does do everything on his own terms. Whether or not that includes watching another stallion bred a mare, I don't know.

Tiznow didn't have a problem getting in the mood per say, he didn't know how to jump the mares. So Lisa had to teach him to rear up and cover a mare. I have pictures of him rearing on command for her when my husband and I visited there shortly after he started his breeding career.

Ah, ok. Do most stallions just naturally know how to jump a mare, how common is that they don't? I would assume that when a stallion starts a career, that they are taught certain behaviors in the shed to make the process as safe as possible.Private Thoughts wrote:Tiznow didn't have a problem getting in the mood per say, he didn't know how to jump the mares. Not sure about that.
Most of the farms I worked, the stallions were more than happy to go to the shed. From things I have read, seems more than a few stallions have issues with the breeding shed, but then it is all so artificial and controlled. I think alot of these guys would not have issues if left with a herd of mares to pasture breed as nature intended.
Lisa was something with both Tiznow and Distorted Humor. Especially Distorted Humor, he was so silly, like a big dog. She taught them alot of tricks, but then they seemed to really love her and wanted to please her. I came to meet her through my husband, he used to work with her before she went to WinStar.

Just learned that Not for love has been pensioned....
For Immediate Release:
MARYLAND’S LEADING SIRE
NOT FOR LOVE RETIRED
Not For Love, Maryland’s leading sire for the past 12 years, has been pensioned at Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City, Md.
Northview owner Richard Golden has been advised by the farm’s veterinarian Dr. Jayson Layfield that the 25-year-old stallion has a reproductive hematoma that would “take too long to heal at this time in the breeding season to consider going forward.”
Not For Love, a son of Mr. Prospector out of the Northern Dancer mare Dance Number, was purchased as a 5-year-old by Golden from breeder Ogden Mills Phipps. A stakes-placed runner initially trained by Shug McGaughey, Not For Love was transferred to the barn of H. Graham Motion and through a career that spanned four seasons, from 2 to 5, he made 29 starts, won six races and earned $178,870.
A full brother to champion 2-year-old Rhythm and graded stakes winner Get Lucky, granddam of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, he represents a tremendous stallion family descending from the famed *La Troienne. His second dam was champion 2-year-old filly Numbered Account.
The bay stallion entered stud at Northview Stallion Station in 1996 and made his mark with his first crop, which included the $2 million juvenile La Salle Street, who equalled the record for a 2-year-old sold at public auction in 1999. With 16 crops to race, Not For Love has sired at least one stakes winner per crop, and 79 stakes winners total. His runners have earned in excess of $68.6 million, topped by millionaire son Eighttofasttocatch.

Crist: Ogygian was short on races but not talent

“Ogygian was really popular and could be really sweet, letting people feed him grass,” Blowen said. “But he could also be really playful – well, in his own way.”
His own way?
“One winter I built a snowman in his paddock with a carrot nose. He went right up to it and ate the nose and then began circling the snowman trying to find more carrot. When he found out there was no more carrot, he stomped that snowman to death.”

I thought he was rather nicely put together, aside from standing him up right off the van after an unknown amount of travel... there did seem to be a bit of muscle-twitching in his shoulder & some trembling/unsteadiness in his front legs, or it might have been partly the footing too. Hard to tell how short his front feet are, but that might have played a role as well.swale1984 wrote:Am I the only one who isn't crazy about his conformation?tachyon wrote:Civil War(JPN), 2005H. I'd like to see him again a month from now, when he's more settled and has a bit more weight. And let's hope he's not as quirky as his sire...!

Well he certainly looks like his sire. I'd also like to see him a month or so from now, and hope he's got genes worth passing on. If War Emblem can't do it....

He does resemble his sire, and in the video- he is reacting to the new surroundings. At one point, the handler has the camera move back, because it is upsetting to him. He could be a more fretful type, should settle down nicely once he learns his routine.

I think the trembling/unsteadiness on his front legs is a familial trait. When I saw his grandsire, Our Emblem, at Taylor Made, he exhibited the same trembling in the front legs.lurkey mclurker wrote:
