I'm just genuinely curious to learn more about the variations in color and markings.The filly's dam is by Airdrie Apache, as mentioned. I work on the farm. Her foal last year by Bluegrass Cat is white with a medicine hat. Check out their website for pictures. This filly is very "under-colored" to what we were expecting. The mare has spots/patches on her belly too. What causes that? I know, of course, that it's genetic, and that probably there isn't quarter horse back there in the pedigree
Put very very simply, there are three genes - sabino, overo and dominant white - that can be expressed over the base coat. The dam, Two Socks, is out of Danzig Withwolves(Danzig - Strategic Maneuver, by Cryptoclearance). Very clever name, as that was the name of the wolf in the movie.
