Are you looking at it from your phone? When I first saw it on my iPhone I was nearly blinded by the amount of sharp contrast/shadows/highlights. But when viewing it on a desktop, it looks normal.BlindLucky wrote:I just wish that whoever did that Gio Ponti picture hadn't gone nuts with the contrast/blacks/highlights in that image.

Nope, not using my phone. Looks like a bad edit job from my desktop.Life At Zen wrote:Are you looking at it from your phone? Mucho Macho Man's front hooves, particularly the left one, look weird - what's up with them?

Photographing a very dark horse against a background that is a mix of very dark and very light is just such a bad idea. IMO, neither of those portraits flatter the colts...hope that they were just someone's candids and in no way official conformation portraits of the two.

Wow, Mucho Macho Man isn't exactly looking like a $15,000 stallion, is he? He looks a mess at this point. Or is it just me?

My original post says they are unofficial pics DRF tweeted. I personally am surprised to see that Mucho Macho Man is still as lean as he is, he has been at the farm since when, July?BaroqueAgain1 wrote:Photographing a very dark horse against a background that is a mix of very dark and very light is just such a bad idea. Looks like he's having trouble putting weight on. Wonder how many ulcers his stomach has. Some horses are just hard keepers, though, and I remember him being a fairly skinny 3yo in training. He was retired in July, so he may just be taking a long time to come down from off the track.Horsebagger wrote:Wow, Mucho Macho Man isn't exactly looking like a $15,000 stallion, is he? My gelding took a good year to relax and put on weight after the track. He was internalizing everything (we think) and possibly thought he was going back to the track, so once he realized he was staying he got better. The ulcer treatment can take a while.
I bet this time next year he will look way better.

I believe this one of Birdstone is new.

I don't think it's the angle. IMO, it's not so much that he has a short back, but that he has a really deep withers. IIRC, Gayego was a very good miler, and his build seems suited for that.

Thanks. I definitely find him appealing; he still looks very athletic.BaroqueAgain1 wrote:I don't think it's the angle. IMO, it's not so much that he has a short back, but that he has a really deep withers. IIRC, Gayego was a very good miler, and his build seems suited for that.

I think Gayego was always short backed. Very solidly build horse, looking a tad chunky. Bird Stone isn't a flashy looking horse, but is well put together.
Mucho Macho Man has always been an awkward, gangly horse; not surprised he still looks like that. I also think that picture is quite unflattering.
