He is gorgeous! I like the choice. When breeding to race people tend to pick stallions that are not super commercial.

Can't wait to see the baby, hope it has chrome and pretty chestnut like it's sire.

From what it sounds like in the article, Black Caviar is supposed to be bred to him today. Kind of quick since she had the foal about two weeks ago, no?

Wasn't even two weeks- from what I am seeing it was either late on the night of the 11th or early morning hours of the 12th. I thought it too at least 2 weeks for them to come into heat again- but I guess the vet felt something and told them it was time.

ETA- in googling this- mares seem to come into their foal heat 7-14 days after birth.

Depends totally on the mare. Some come in quick and are ready to go 7 to 9 days later and some are a bit later. Sure would be nice if it was always the same with all mares. Would make it a lot easier!

Breeders I know tend to not breed their mares back on the foal heat, preferring to let the mare completely recover from the stresses of foaling. I'm a little surprised by Nelly's connections choosing to breed her on her foal heat, but can only hope that they were totally sure this was not going to be a problem for her.

The farm I worked for about 30 years ago always bred on the foal heat. The owner said that they seemed to get in foal better and not slip so much.

She's one of the most valuable broodmares in the world, owned by one of Australia's most prominent owners, I think they were totally sure that it wouldn't be a problem for her.
