That's a shame...the 8-year-old Unusual Heat gelding has been a reliable contender for a long time.
What is going in with Belmont? Doesn't it seem like there have been a lot of fatalities so far, and we're hardly into the meeting? :(

The latest casualty (Maui Mark) was listed as on the training track, the other three just mentioning training but didn't specify whether main track or training track. Either way, over the last four days, it averages out to one death per day, which - yes, IMO - is unacceptably high.

RIP Maui Mark! Rest easy old man! :(
Wow, what is going on at Belmont? After Saratoga this is starting to be a very very very sad trend.

I know I read that Skiddles n’ Bob was working on the training track. Haven't been able to find where I read it, but I'll keep checking...

RIP Maui Mark. Seems like I have been seeing his name on entry sheets forever. Aside from a handful of races, he was
a West coaster. Passed around a few times in his career, but always did his best. Sorry to lose him so soon. Maybe The Tin Man has a picture
of him that he could post?

Thanks jjacks1. I knew TTM would have a picture of that beautiful boy...

And another Belmont casualty - Discreet Code, who DNF on Saturday 9/14, and who per the NYRA "all incident types" database shows as having broken his RF leg and having been euthanized "in the necropsy area". Interestingly enough, he only shows up in the "all incident types" list but not under "equine deaths", presumably because being categorized as a breakdown and not a death.

8yo Maui Mark broke down in training yesterday at BEL. Like Mentor Cane, he fractured a hind leg. A son of Unusual Heat, Mark was fairly new to the East Coast, having spent most of his career out west. He was a stakes winner and a pretty good racehorse. 34-11-2-6, $435,155.

Apologies for repeating some info already posted. Hadn't figured out the new board yet.

Not to worry, we're probably all still finding our feet. It's the same as the old board, with just enough tiny difference to make it feel not quite familiar.

Here are some death reports I've seen on the Jockey Club website...

Frontside - 2008 f. War Front x Azarba. Race record: 18-5-3-2. She last raced at Indiana Downs in June, when she won a stakes. I'm not sure how she died, but she was a lovely filly from War Front's first crop. She was third in the GII Honey Fox this past March.

Princess Rania (VEN) - 2009 f. War Front x Witchy Moon. Race record: 4-0-1-0. Her last race was 12/28/12 and she was vanned off after that race, but her death report is from 2013.

Big Top - 2006 c. Giant's Causeway x Thorough Fair. Race record: 31-4-9-4. Was pulled up and vanned off in his last start in February at Oaklawn.

Cyberwarfare - 2010 c. War Front x Legendary Lady. He was unraced.

War Cadet - 2011 c. War Front x Sweet Bernadette. He was unraced.

unnamed - 2013 c. War Front x Divine Escapade.
unnamed - 2013 f. Harlan's Holiday x Holler

Maybe they tried to save her but couldn't? Because its only a couple days from her injury until 2013.

Mark was a fixture out here for a long time. Very consistent steady pony. Fast too! Stakes winner and consistent allowance horse ... Hate losing him. I have a soft spot for the old guys ... and he was a good one. :(

22/8 - Memo To Kathy - Foundered In Left Hindleg at Humboldt
Here's a picture of Memo To Kathy ... She was such a striking girl ... I saw her run many times out here ... She was always such a stand out in the paddock. Beautiful horse. May she rest in peace.
