I loved Blind Luck...she was a formidable racehorse, and faster than she looked like she ought to be.
But if she's now being sold, I wonder if it has turned out that her less-than-elegant conformation and her modest pedigree have caught up with her...perhaps her present owners have found that she's not turning out to be a great broodmare?

Maybe I haven't been following the sales long enough, but this is one of the most impressive (or depressing) hauls of horses that I have seen at a sale in quite a while. Some that jumped out at me:

Maybe I haven't been following the sales long enough, but this is one of the most impressive (or depressing) hauls of horses that I have seen at a sale in quite a while.

I'm going with that one.

Well, he raced her too, so maybe he got 2 foals from her and decided to recoup some of the money he spent on buying her out by putting her back into the auction ring. I don't know that he has sold either of her foals, though I might be wrong. At least he got one of each, a filly and a colt

And if you listen closely, you can hear, 10 years from now, North American fans and industry members scratching their heads as to why our stock doesn't quite hold up internationally anymore.

Northport, i've been saying this for several years now. we don't bid on/keep/have enough patience with the horses we have, send em overseas, then complain about how weak this year's crop is. gee, wonder why.

IMHO, Japanese breeders have been the cagiest buyers, collecting not only stallions like Sunday Silence, Charismatic, Silver Charm, Roses In May and I'll Have Another, but even more well-bred mares who also succeeded on the track. In fact, I believe the drain of really good mares is going to be the biggest loss for our breeding industry.
Japan is already turning out tremendous racehorses, and it would appear that their stock is only going to improve.
Not sure how much this is going to change the depth and quality of American broodmare bands, which are the vital gene pool for US racehorses, but the pessimist in me thinks it can't be good.

Of the stallions you mentioned, though, only Sunday Silence made any real impact at stud in Japan (and obviously, his impact was huge). And the jury is out on IHA 'til he has runners, but I guess he's gotten a decent number of mares.

[Private Thoughts]

Those stallions mentioned are but a few. And since a lot of Japan's racing is grass racing it is not surprising that our dirt stallions might not make top grass sires.

We continually send off our champions, graded stakes winners, classic winners and bemoan the fact our stock stinks. Well duh......breed the best to the best. Can't do that when the best is long gone.

As mentioned the factory racing stables, get some horses run them a year or two and then cycle them out. While it might make them a buck today, down the road probably not, since the good ones you have today will not be adding to the gene pool of those you want to buy tomorrow. We keep the also rans, the broken down one hit wonders and sell the creme de la creme overseas. Digging our own grave.

This is always blown out of proportion.
I don't think the "best" went over there. Like Mariasmon said, other than Sunday Silence, these horses haven't exactly hit the jackpot. Do we know for a fact that Sunday Silence would've had the success here that he had there?
Silver Charm was not a leading sire when he was here. Aldebaran...? He wasn't doing well at all.
I'll Have Another is a son of FLOWER ALLEY.... who is still here, and not exactly a standout. Charismatic hasn't done much.
The only 2 sires I can think of now that I wish they hadn't sent over there is Empire Maker and Wild Rush. Empire Maker is a top sire, and Wild Rush was better than he was given credit. I don't even know how he is doing over there.
As for the mares, there are just as many impeccably bred mares producing here. Of the mares sent over there, who really has been THAT incredible? Name 5 mares that you would say were a "loss" to our industry!

As for Roses In May, he is a son of the great Devil His Due, a fabulous breed-to-race sire. You can breed to Devil His Due, and have a better chance of a quality horse. And, the year Roses In May was a top racehorse... you know who "we" got to keep in North America... Ghostzapper! That was the best of the best that year. And Pleasantly Perfect (another breed-to-race sire), Birdstone, and Bowman's Band (who died too early).

In I'll Have Another's crop, we've still got Bodemeister, Union Rags, Take Charge Indy, Creative Cause, El Padrino, Gemologist, and Paynter. All better bred than IHA, and judging the way Derby winners go these days, IHA was probably just the "best" during the spring that year.

Azeri, In Lingerie, Proud Spell, Lady Joanne, Ginger Punch. And while I'm at it, Topliner, Lead Story, Smok'n Frolic, Palace Rumor, Santa Teresita, Contested and Champagne d'Oro. I could go on.
