I recall years ago the late John Franks, an oil baron and owner of Franks Farm in Louisiana with over 700 horses, said breeding horse is just like drilling for oil.
You drill 99 wells and they come up dry and maybe the 100th drilling will be a success.
He said the same theory applies to breeding horses.
You can breed the best to the best but even then you are extremely lucky if you can breed 8% to come up with back type.
It's a big gamble and really only for those who can afford it.

Fasig Tipton does them right away, but Keeneland usually seems to need 2-3 weeks to get their list up.swale1984 wrote:Does anyone know how long it typically takes Keeneland to get the RNA to sale report up? There were quite a few I was following that went RNA and I'd like to see if they showed up on the report (I realize not every sale shows up).

The RNAs are on the excel sales results.
Select All Sessions from pull down Session menu
On the RNA heading type in RNA in the blank box at top of column.
All the RNAs will come up, nothing else.
You can save in a PDF file.
There 787 RNAs in the sale

I think they are looking for the report that shows RNAs that were sold privately. Fasig Tipton immediately puts this information directly into the sale results, but Keeneland makes a separate report, which sometimes takes weeks to appear online.Hail To Reason wrote:The RNAs are on the excel sales results.

There is between 790 and 800 RNAs in the sale

Taylor Made usually seems to update their RNA private sales: http://taylormaderna.com/rna/

Sorry, I misunderstood.
I've been to a sale of RNAs at Taylor Made in the past.
I didn't consider that sale as part of KEE but a separate sale.

Yes, they do have an RNA sale. And sometimes several consignors have banded together for joint RNA sales. But I imagine some of those Taylor Made listed were probably still sold privately on the sale grounds.Hail To Reason wrote:Sorry, I misunderstood.

That's the report I'm looking for. Like I said, I know Keeneland needs permission to list the sales (apparently, not all buyers are willing to have them published), but there were several I was hoping to see on the list.

I've purchased several horses privately at the sales and in each case both parties have been happy to have the transaction be handled by Keeneland because then the credit/money is already in place and no one has to worry about the validity of the transaction.Admin wrote:Private sales in a certain time frame of the horse appearing in the catalogue "count" as auction sales. Keeneland will hunt you down for the commission if you try to sell privately without submitting the paperwork through their company.Hail To Reason wrote:Sorry, I misunderstood.

As for horses who've appeared in the catalogue being "auction sales" I've been told that that only applies to horses who have been on the sales grounds. If a horse is entered and then withdrawn from the sale (but still appears in the catalogue) and subsequently sells privately off the farm, the $1,000 sales entry fee is Keeneland's cut for "advertising" in their catalogue.

I have no idea how they would be able to enforce that. Why is there a difference between selling privately (but not through their auction ie, making no use of their grounds or their facility or their gathering of buyers) and pulling a horse who is catalogued in the back of the KeeSep sale and selling him in FT October? Every year, including this one, there are dozens of horses who were catalogued for the September sale but didn't like their placement and re-entered instead in FTOct. Does Keeneland chase all of them for a second commission when they sell? And if not, why not, if the mere fact of being catalogued means that they are due a commission?Admin wrote:I asked a top consignor this morning to verify, and the above isn't correct. If a horse is sold privately within 3 months of appearing in the catalogue, KEE is due a commission. The horse doesn't need to have ever shipped to the grounds -- only be in their catalogue. The $1,000 may cover the minimum commission for some, but they will understandably seek the commission on higher-valued stock.TBird wrote:

Kind of bummed that hip 7 isn't on that list. That was one gorgeous colt. Anyone else surprised the Tapit/Peeping Fawn only brought $100,000?TBird wrote:The KeeSep RNA to Sale list is now available: http://www.keeneland.com/sites/default/ ... ep2014.pdf

On pedigree, yes. But who knows what he looks like or how he vets?swale1984 wrote:Anyone else surprised the Tapit/Peeping Fawn only brought $100,000?TBird wrote:The KeeSep RNA to Sale list is now available: http://www.keeneland.com/sites/default/ ... ep2014.pdf

I liked the look of that one. Of course, I was only watching the video. One I was very keen on from pedigree was hip 13 (Tapit/Lassie's Legacy)...but seeing it on the video,I totally changed my mind.

This article has a table that shows the >$1million buys out of this sale and their results so far. It also shows the cost of each Kentucky Derby winner since 1970. I thought it was a good article for those interested in breeding and sales and didn't really know where best to post it.

https://www.thoroughbredracing.com/arti ... -huge-starThree-year-olds with undefeated records in late March are inevitably subjected to grandiose expectations.
Yet of all the major contenders on this year’s Triple Crown trail, only Mohaymen will carry with him a weight that has been crushing for so many other horses before him.
