I seem to remember a subforum on the old site devoted to racing posts about other types of horse racing, such as harness, Quarterhorses and jumps. Is there interest in resurrecting it?
* Today, jockey Chantal Sutherland-Cruze set a North American record for trotters under saddle on a 5/8 track at the Meadows Casino track on NY Yank.

Lyonssomewhere wins $437,325 Cane Pace

Geoffrey Lyons Mound's Lyonssomewhere led from start to finish and posted an upset at odds of 19-1 with a 1:49.4 score in the $437,325 Cane Pace, the first leg of the Triple Crown, on Monday (Sept. 1) at Tioga Downs.

Aw crap...from Paulick: Source at Ruidoso says condition of All American Futurity winner JM Miracle not good. In 2013 Ruidoso Futurity winner died of kidney failure

Update from Mary R.: He was cooled down and vanned back to his barn as a precautionary measure, according to a release from Ruidoso Downs.

One horse in distress is one thing. A second horse from the same barn exhibiting the same problems? That's not a coincidence.
Sounds like clenbuterol overdose, but since I believe that drug is tested for, I wonder if the behind-the-curtain chemists have concocted something that gives the same boost, but which doesn't show up in the tests?

Judging by what I've read this morning on various sites (which is still not exactly in-depth), it sounds like the horses were suffering from a combo of heat and dehydration. That might indicate that there were no illegal substances involved, but IMHO, the after-affects of legal NSAIDS, bute and lasix in a horse's system, when it's hot and the horse gets badly fatigued and dehydrated, can still be very hard on a horse.
It's also possible that the high altitude amplified the horses' reactions to their intense efforts.

I haven't heard whether any other horses during the day's races at Ruidoso also suffered from dehydration. It's possible that there were, but we just haven't heard about them because they weren't high-profile winners.
That said, I do think that having two horses from the same barn exhibit the same issues is more than a coincidence. Could there be illicit substances involved? Maybe. Or maybe it's the case of a trainer, through either inexperience or the motivation of greed, pushed his horses too hard in getting them primed for an extreme effort.

I thought that when he was interviewed afterwards on TVG he was smiling too much and didn't show much concern for the horse. Just agreed he might have tied up a little. Of course if he was confident it wasn't serious, there was no sin in celebrating the win.

Mission Brief sets world record of 1:50.3 in International Stallion Stake

A quartet of Explosive Matter International Stallion Stakes were contested for 2-year-old trotting fillies on a bright and sunny Thursday afternoon (Oct. 2) at Lexington’s famed Red Mile.

In the second $80,550 division Mission Brief provided fans with another world record performance, trotting to a 1:50.3 mile with her nearest rival some 16 lengths behind her. Driver Yannick Gingras had the filly under wraps at the finish line in a simply electrifying mile over the red clay. The time was two-fifths of a second off the all-age record for distaffs in the sport of harness racing, set by 7-year-old mare Giant Diablo in 2007, also at The Red Mile.
