She's an older mare and sometimes they have trouble keeping weight on them. She did not get back in foal for 2015, so I'm guessing her body wanted a break. But I don't think Gainesway was doing untoward.

Looks like Black Caviar has foaled a filly today. The news is all over twitter. No pics yet.

Interesting how many champion mares have fillies this year. Black Caviar, Danedream, Zenyatta, Midday, Stacelita, More Joyous and many more. May they all grow up healthy and become great broodmares one day.

Her managing owner Neil Werrett was there for the birth and said all went smoothly.

"She did it all very naturally with very little assistance," Werrett told Sydney's Sky Sports Radio. "The filly is outstanding with two small white socks and a bit of white across the head. We were lucky to arrive about five minutes before she started to give birth."

"She (Black Caviar) is great. She has taken to it like a duck to water and the first thing she wanted to do afterwards was eat."

That's a strong-looking boy, and I love the flaxen in his tail. Wonder if he will keep that as he gets older?
