In a true emergency situation, SCTR took in "Lucky" today. Here's his story as posted by Caroline tonight. With some photos below:

"Sometimes, there isn't the time or opportunity to fundraise before we rescue a horse. And we rarely ask for assistance. But if anyone can help support the rescue costs of "Lucky" - a very sweet thoroughbred gelding we took in today who needed immediate veterinary attention - we would be so grateful. "Lucky" is just two and a half years old, his teeth tell our vet. He does not have a registered name as far as we know. Nor does he have a tattoo. What we do know - via Auction Horses Rescue who thankfully found him this week and alerted us to his situation - is that he retired, un-raced, from a local racetrack about one week ago. He has four aluminum plates on his feet. He has a relatively recent bridle-path. His coat is slick. His body is lean. And last weekend just a day or two after his retirement from racing, we learned via Auction Horses Rescue that Lucky suffered some nasty injuries in his new owner's backyard when some friends decided to use him for "roping practice" We were able to secure him today, and had him transported immediately to Apple Valley Equine Hospital where he was treated late this afternoon. We are deeply thankful for the care and attention he received there as Dr Lenhert cleaned his chest and ankle wounds, the chest wound he though likely from Lucky being impaled on a fence post, inoculated him to prevent tetanus, administered penicillin, and x-rayed his ankle to ensure there was no infection or fracture from his fetlock injury. Dr Lenhert also named him for us We are attempting to discover his identity, and try to ensure that no other young horses retiring from racing suffer the same fate. if you know anyone that retired a two year old from training in the last week or so - please share his photos. And if you can spare some change to assist with his vet bills and rescue costs, we would so appreciate your support for Lucky! As always, our website with paypal links is http://www.sctbrescue.org and our paypal address is sctbrescue@live.com THANK YOU!"

Boston Baked Bean, 7yo gelding, ran at Los Al yesterday. Tonight he's at Mike's Auction in Mira Loma.

Wow, I always rooted for this guy, at first just 'cause I liked his name. Antonio Soto's name seems to come up a lot at auctions like this. Even if the CHRB has rules against sending horses to slaughter, sending them to Mike's Auction to be purchased by match racers probably doesn't matter to them. Yet the end result is likely just as miserable for the horse. Is there anything at all that can be done about situations like this...anyone we can send off letters to register alarm? It's so hard to like this "sport" sometimes <sad>.

My relatively shaky understanding is that Los Al, for regulatory purposes, is considered a QH meet, and therefore there is some sort of waiver as to regs regarding the TB races they run. CARMA, for instance, has no presence at Los Al at all., Los Al has been granted approval to run a 2-week and a 3-week TB daytime meet in 2014. Whether that will bring them under different regs is something I don't know.

Bottom line, though, is that the management at Los Al doesn't give a damn what happens to TBs or QHs stabled at that track -- OR, alternative version I've heard from several, is too frightened of the scum at the track to take any action.

And, yes, Soto doesn't even pretend to give a damn about what happens to his horses. Nor do his owners. But they aren't the only ones.

Interesting, thanks, second_glance. So here's what I'm thinking, though my understanding of all this is really shaky too. I'll do a quick search for which regulatory agency in CA approved the expanded TB meet (I know I read about it but I can't keep the roles of all "fingers in the pie" straight. I'll send off a message asking if they plan to apply similar rules to Los Al as they do to Hollywood Park, etc. And I'll quote this situation (Boston Baked Bean and this trainer) to ask if anything will change at Los Al because of the expansion, in particular if they plan to require that the track work with the rescues to place horses rather than send them directly to auction. Yeah I know it likely won't do diddleysquat but I just can't not do anything anymore, not as long as I continue to support horse racing.

That would be terrific! Thank you. The more voices they hear from, the better. The CHRB is the authority that approved the Los Al TB meets.

I am too tired to wait up to see what happens at the auction, but am hearing that one of the good guys is on site to bid for Boston Baked Bean and another one will be trying to get Bonneville Storm, who sold through auction last month, for $1K, yet is back at this auction this month.

Done. They have an online web form. We'll see if and what kind of response I get.

Sure hope the good guys outbid the bad guys for them!

Okay, some results from Mike's auction last night:

Boston Baked Bean and Bonneville Storm were purchased by private buyers who are among the good guys. In addition, Megan was able to buy 22yo Best Anthem (67 starts) from a KB who paid $95 for him. He was literally on the truck when Megan made the deal. Finally, an intact male TB named Father Jim was turned away from the auction because there were already too many stallions on the lot. Some folks will be working with his owners to find him a new home.

Its sad to see 2yos at a sale like this. Father Jim is an unraced 2yo by Orientate out Test The Waters, by Chequer.

Well, there's bad news and then good news about Boston Baked Bean. The private buyer they were counting on never showed up to pick him up. So Megan ended up taking him, for $800. The extra-bad news, just posted, is that he's colicking, so is on the way to the clinic.

The good news down the road is that his breeder back in KY will take him, but obviously that will take $$ to get him there.

So. If you have $5 or $10 laying around, Auction Horses Rescue could sure use it: paypal to auctionhorsesrescue@gmail.com

Kudos to his breeder for doing the right thing. Hopefully he can get through tonight ok so he can munch away on the green pastures of KY again.

I got that wrong. It's the sire's breeder who is willing to take in BBB.

Even more kudos. They don't have any obligation to take him in but clearly are doing it for the horse's well-being.

I know this goes on at auctions, but I can just never wrap my brain around it.

From AHR re: Boston Baked Bean (posted 6 hours ago)

Boston Baked Bean has been through quite the ordeal, the past two days. Forty-eight hours ago, this 6-year-old gelding ran at Los Alamitos, coming in dead last in a $7,000 claimer. Less than 24 hours after that, he was dumped at auction, unrelentingly taunted by some of the auction attendees, through the night and into the morning. Referred to at auction as "the mean horse," the terror in his eye spoke more to what was going on...as rocks were thrown at him, smoke blown in his face, and he was smacked and slapped over and over....so more people could laugh as he lunged at them in defense.

After the "private buyer" who purchased him at auction failed to show, we were faced with the option to purchase him for $800, mid-colic....or let him go. So..the $800 purchase was made...A hefty fee to bail a horse from misery. We hired a hauler and had him shipped directly to the hospital, where he now stands, under their watchful eye. Since 10am, he's passed only one pile of manure. At least he's stopped kicking at and biting at his sides....and at people (likely another reason he was lunging, he was in a great deal of pain and distress).

So...we've taken on another high expense rescue. When it rains, it pours. What a devastating near-tragic end for this Kentucky-bred Thoroughbred, almost to be forever traumatized and wrecked by the match racers vying for him.

Prayers tonight for Boston Baked Bean, that he recovers fully...not just in body, but in his heart. His trust will return...we will make sure of it.

If you can help, please donate directly to our hospital West Coast Equine at (805) 386-7151 or through our Paypal auctionhorsesrescue@gmail.com

I didn't recognize his sire right away (Unforgettable Max), but his pedigree was familiar as soon as I saw it. Unforgettable Max is a full brother to Afleet Alex.

Boston Baked Bean's half-brother, Bellamy Jones, must have had a little bad luck, too. That one was the 2010 Champion Indiana-bred 2 yr old male, won some stakes, has made over $200k, and last ran 9/29 in a $2.5k claimer at Mt. Pleasant.

I hope that BBB will be ok, if the PM was up, I would send something to Tin Man. He's one of his favorites. He was in the same barn as Grand Mischief at one point, who I have been unable to locate since she was pulled up in her last race at Los Al on 5/24. Looking at BBB's chart, he changed barns.

I just contacted Tin Man via FB- thought he would like to know.

Despite having won his last start at SUF in September, and finishing 2nd in the two starts before that, 5yo gelding My Brother Chuck showed up at New Holland today -- consigned by his breeder (whose rep is less than good), not his owner/trainer. Thanks to Kelly Smith, Deb Jones, Suffolk Downs, CANTER, and others, he is now safe. (He was also wearing the halter of a horse named Jo Jo, who ran at SUF today.)
