I'm not as upset about his sale as I was about Rock Hard Ten's. At least, with Hansen, his sire is still alive and well, plus we have a bunch of other good Tapit sons standing at the moment in the States.

If Hansen (the guy) didn't think of the possibility of the horse being sold overseas, which is what he claims, he was extremely naive.

Good for Korea. Theyve been stepping up their breeding game so this is awesome. Could be a really good chance for Hansen to be a good sire.

Possibly, though after reading a few things about the national breeding and racing industries there (and basing this off of 2012 numbers), there are only about 1300 foals born per year in Korea. How many of those mares will Hansen have a shot at? Who knows. They also only have 2 racetracks in the country. It's definitely a different model than most other countries we're familiar with.

To some extent, South Korea is patterning itself after Japan's breeding effort to become an international player. Heretofore, in order to protect domestic breeders and owners there had been quite significant monetary restrictions on what the the KRA could spend overseas to bring in racing horses and broodmares in foal, and the imported horses nearly always race in their own class (i.e., not against the domestic-breds). But now they are opening up a bit on at least the former, and working especially hard to import a better class of stallions and broodmares for their domestic breeders to access.

Some people will just never forget, and the outrage over Ferdinand and Exceller makes such a dandy excuse for ignoring that the same fate has befallen thousands of racehorses here. And still does, though these days we ship them to Canada and Mexico for "processing".

Yeah, there are some people over on FB saying stuff like that. I tried to explain to them about the buy back clause and how there is an on-line community like us who try and watch these things. From what I have seen of South Korea so far, they are doing a good job. There is so much more transparency than in the past- and the internet helps with this.

Well, it's not just that they could end up in a casserole. It's basically a black hole that they go into regarding ever seeing the horse again or watching its offspring.

As for buy-back clauses, they're good-intentioned but basically worth only as much as the honor of the new owner. Suing someone in a foreign country, after the deed has already been done, is what the former owner is left with. In this case, however, it appears that Coolmore hasn't given up total control over their stallion interest and the contract could be more significant and enforceable than normal.

That's what I'm hoping and thinking as well.

Well Hansen will have 2 crops of horses that will race in North America, his current foals and his current unborn foals.

That said I'm disappointed, I really liked Hansen and I was hoping he would stay over here.
