I follow Hard Spun babies in the other thread and happy to see Reload get this win. He is HS's 26th stakes winner and his 8th grades stakes winner. The time was really excellent, too.

Mr Speaker finished second in the Palm Beach S (G3) at Gulfsteam today.

He's not Phipps-owned, but Peter Island (Tapit-Resort), who is from a Phipps family and Shug-trained, won R7 at Gulfsteam today in his first start.

Couple of Phipps 3-year-old fillies making their debuts today at Gulfstream. In the 4th race, Gasparilla Inn (by Street Cry out of Boca Grande) goes 6 furlongs on the dirt, while in the 6th, Place of Honor (by First Samurai out of My Flag) goes a mile on the turf.

Gasparilla Inn was a closing 3rd in her race, just a nose out of 2nd but well behind the winner after rallying wide off the turn.

Place of Honor was relatively close-up early while mid pack, but just one-paced through the lane. Looked like she came home 5th or 6th.

Both fairly typical Shug debuts, each in its own way.

On an unrelated topic, some of the Phipps yearlings have been named:

Bombs Away (C. Smart Strike - Protesting)
Promote (C. Blame - Collusion)
Sail Ahoy (C. Bernardini - Matlacha Pass)

Blenheim Palace (F. Medaglia d'Oro - Pleasant Home)
Play It Now (F. Smart Strike - On Parade)
Sound the Trumpets (F. Bernardini - My Flag)
Take Charge (F. Hard Spun - Hidden Reserve)
Vagabond (F. Arch - Voyage)

Delighted to see that Sabbatical (Medaglia D'Oro - Daydreaming) broke her maiden today at Keeneland by open lengths in her seasonal debut this afternoon! Does anyone know why Shug scratched Reload from the Maker's 46 Mile stakes?

Abaco finished a fast-closing third in the Jenny Wiley (G1T) at Keeneland today. She missed second by a nose.

And was I bummed - had her and Hard Not to Like in a boxed exacta - would have been nice...

Woo Hoo!! Mr Speaker was very impressing winning the Lexington at Keeneland!! Will he go to the Derby? He didn't seem to care much for the dirt at Gulfstream.

I don't think Mr. Speaker has the points (the race today only awarded 10 pts.), and I doubt that Shug would wheel a colt back in two weeks to run on a surface he doesn't like.

Shug said after the race Mr. Speaker is pointing to the Jamaica, renamed and with a slots hiked purse of $1.25M as the Gr I Belmont Derby Invitational for 3yo at 10F on the turf on July 5th. Talk about a regally named race - likely to see some Euros with that purse. My guess is as that race is eleven weeks away and Belmont has a 9F turf race for $200k on Memorial Day, the Pennine Ridge, hopefully we will see him in both. He's a marvelous looking and moving colt.

Wow - finally saw a replay of the race. What a great job of getting him off the rail and then he just flew. Can't wait to see more of him and hope he handles the dirt as well as the synthetic...

I sure wish Claden was here. I read where Shug was praising Salute's 2 year old, sired by War Front. I don't ever remember Shug praising a 2 year old this early.

Love all the Phipps horses in California Chrome's pedigree, especially that he's inbred to Numbered Account.
