Wicked Strong worked 7/8ths and galloped out to 1 mile at Belmont's training track this morning in preparation for the Kentucky Derby. He ships to Churchill Downs over the weekend.

David Grening @DRFGrening.....
Wicked Strong, on my watch, 7-8ths from 1-2 mile pole, in 1:27.11 out a mile 1:40.72. Last 3-8ths in 37.66 was best part of work.

Wicked Strong galloped at Churchill this morning.

Mike Welch from DRF had this to say:

WICKED STRONG

Wood winner Wicked Strong paid his first visit to the CD track and after gawking around a bit once jogging back to finish line, including taking a long look at the Big Board, he seemed very focused galloping an easy mile. Will keep close eye on him the next couple of days as he seems to be one of the ones who can win the Derby. Uncle Sign jogged here yesterday but had an easy gallop this a.m. The last of the 3 New Yorkers in the Derby, Samraat arrives later today.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch....

Integrity won the Elusive Quality Stakes at Belmont Park today by 3 lengths. It was taken off the turf and all but 4 horses were scratched.

Sadly, Handstand broke down in his race and was euthanized. So sorry. RIP Handstand.

Counter Spin won race #5 at Morphettsville in Australia. He and another horse finished in a dead heat for first. They were a nose ahead of the 3rd place finisher. His record is now 11-3-0-2.

race replay: race caller says the other horse won, but photo shows a dead heat and charts reflect that, too.

Wicked Strong finished 4th in the Kentucky Derby. Started far out side post #20, hung very wide on first turn. Pace was much slower than expected, which puts closers like him at a distinct disadvantage. But he didn't give up and grabbed 4th. Can't complain.

Final time of race was slowest time in 20 years (excepting 2004 and 2010 when track was sloppy). This is why it was hard to close ground.

Latest word is that Wicked Strong will probably bypass the Preakness and wait for the Belmont. He has a win over the Belmont track...broke his maiden there last fall.

From DRF.com:
Trainer Jimmy Jerkens said aside from a scrape on a hock, Wicked Strong came out of his fourth-place finish in the Derby relatively unscathed. Jerkens felt his horse ran well considering all the traffic he had in the stretch, especially when Danza cut in front of him at the eighth pole. He was beaten 5 3/4 lengths.

“I was livid. I thought he had a lot of traffic down the lane,” Jerkens said Sunday morning. “Every time he went to go somewhere, he got shut off. I was really happy to see that he got fourth.”

Regarding the Preakness, Jerkens said, “It doesn’t seem like the right thing to do. Who knows? He might do something when we get back home to make me change my mind.”

Blendwell won race #4, a maiden race, at Mornington in Australia today. Her record is now 4-1-0-1. First time blinkers on made a huge difference. She won easily by 6 or 7. She's trained by Peter Moody, who trained Black Caviar. Blendwell was also ridden by Luke Nolen who rode Black Caviar.

Surfspun won race #1 at Belmont Park today. Pretty testing early fractions. He was in a three-way battle for the lead early on. Shook those runners off and had to overcome another challenger down the stretch. He prevailed by a neck.
