Little Distorted (Distorted Humor x Asbeautifulasyou (AP Indy x Santa Catarina)) is back in the 7th at Gulfstream tomorrow. He's the colt that blew away Revolutionary in his debut, then Silverton Hill bought him and dropped anchors on his feet by giving him to Darrin Miller, now he's been off a year and is back with Bill Mott.

He meets Accelerate, who is a full brother to Value Plus, Sing Baby Sing and Werblin.

Volare, 2nd fav with Iwata aboard, simply didn't run, finishing 7th more than 3 sec. behind the winner.

Is there any reason why he debuted on dirt and not turf?

I don't know exactly why they allowed him to go on the dirt. They perhaps didn't think he would be competitive in speed required on turf. Anyway, this is his first race, although certainly not a promising start.

I was wondering this too. Doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

That's a nicely-bred colt for whom owners (Coolmore's Tabor & Smith) probably have high expectations. He looked good, but will he be able to pull off these front-running wins in better company?
He's a three-year-old by Giant's Causeway, so I will wager that we see him in a Derby prep...just because. :P

Katsuhiko Sumii is a trainer who knows his business.
I would think that the 1800m on dirt was a logical choice for Volare's debut despite of his pedigree background.
This colt had been known as an unusually big (fat) colt who weighed 600kg+ last year.
When he joined Sumii stable last month, he still weighed 600 kilograms.
Few might imagine such a big colt would be sharp enough to be competitive on the turf in Japan.
(best turf horses in Japan weigh around 440 - 510 kilograms on average. Symboli Kris S is remembered as a huge colt but he only weighed 540 kilograms)
They took action on Volare's weight problem.
He actually lost some weight, but still weighed 580 kilograms on Sunday.
Kastuhiko Sumii commented after the race, ''Volare needs more races.''
That was rather a workout than a race, MM and Starine.
Hence dirt debut.

I'm glad it was a workout, because it wasn't much of a race :)

Cozmic One is in Equibase now, not that I think he'll make a start anytime soon....
