They did the right thing by Chelokee, sending him to AZ, though. He can breed some mares, see if he can pass on any of his talent and good looks, but he doesn't have to service a KY-sized book. More importantly, he has excellent on-site vet care available and a good climate for living with his injury. And he has a good team of people caring for him on a daily basis, plus it seems they're all very fond of him.

I remember he was a running freak, and he's lucky to be alive. I think it's pretty cool he's breeding. He looks like a gentleman.

I looked it up. He had a complete dislocation of his ankle, shattered sesamoids. Ugly.

There was a remark about him not being to go out into a pasture as a result of the damage, so I wonder how much mobility he actually has. Is he able to walk out in a small paddock to get some sun and fresh air? Is he able to breed naturally? Or are those yearlings the product of AI?
Which would mean that they might end up as great riding horses or fine sports horses, but not be able to race.
That's OK with me, as long as Chelokee's kids have a good future.

I read that comment as referring to the months immediately after his 2008 surgery, when he also required 24-hour monitoring. I do think they have mostly dry lots at the university.

There are photos of him turned out on a dry lot and turned out on grass on the U of Az's Racetrack Industry Program's Facebook page. Aside from that scary foot, he looks really good! He's definitely in the right hands there.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm glad that Chelokee does have a good quality of life, after all...and that he has offspring racing. He was a good racehorse and I hope does well as a sire.

I remember when I visited Claiborne years ago, one of the grooms said Ogygian took a while to "get in the mood", so they would let him watch through a window to help speed things along when it was his turn. This earned him the nickname "porno horse"

Eagles Peak finds a home in Barbados:

Eagles Peak has been purchased to stand in Barbados at the stud farm of Paul Noel, one of the Caribbean's leading breeders.

The Juddmonte Farms bred son of Galileo is out of the Group 2 winning Quest For Fame mare High Praise, a half-sister to Group 1 winning miler, and sire of Group 1 winner African Rose, Observatory.

The six-year-old was trained by Sir Michael Stoute to win two of his four starts. He also finished sixth to Al Kazeem in the Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes last year.

"I am delighted that Eagles Peak is going to stand in Barbados," Stoute said. "He is a quality horse with a grand temperament and possessed the ability to win stakes races in Europe."

Eagles Peak, believed to be the first son of Galileo to stand anywhere in the Caribbean, was purchased for Noel by bloodstock agent Richard Venn.

Noel said: "I am thrilled to have Eagles Peak in Barbados. He is an exceptionally good-looking horse and Galileo has been champion sire in Europe for the last four years. He is, of course, the sire of the mighty Frankel.

"Eagles Peak's dam, High Praise, won several Group races in France. Her first four foals are all winners and Eagles Peak is her highest rated progeny.

"Racing is all about having high expectations and I can't wait to see his first two-year-olds in action at the Garrison Savannah in 2017."

Venn added: "The stallion will be a huge asset to Barbadian mare owners. I am excited about his prospects and delighted to have negotiated his purchase, which is my first for a Caribbean client."
