looking for more information, but the article says that a lot of the time, the foal can be treated and saved. what i didn't understand was what symptoms would have to be present for that to not be an option? is it just too costly for something that might not work?
From what I read in the article, sometimes the organ damage is so great, that the foal will not survive. Also, SB said it was a red bag delivery, so the little one was doubly compromised- since most vets agree that both problems can cause a lack of oxygen. The neurological problems may have also been so great, that it was not compatible with life- and was kinder to let the foal not suffer a miserable and painful life. Not an expert, but that is what I got from it.
oh man, i didn't even see the red bag part. yeah, that clicked the rest of the info together for sure. thanks you for expanding a little more for me.

i'm sorry for the lost foal, but i hope the other lives a nice healthy life.

The one good thing that may come out of this is that the mare will now have more milk and energy for the remaining foal. Hope she thrives.
Question--why aren't the foals of nurse mares kept with them together with the foster foal? Wouldn't she make more milk to feed both of them? Or wouldn't she accept the foster foal? There was a post on Facebook today about an outfit in Ohio looking for people to take and raise foals of nurse mares. I have no idea if it was genuine or propaganda, but the pictures of nurse mares shared on this forum seem pretty healthy and hearty and capable of feeding two foals. Apparently it isn't done. Wondered why?

I suspect how much milk a mare can produce varies greatly from horse to horse, and even nursing just one foal takes a lot of energy. The dam often loses weight, despite bountiful food. The breeders of TBs may have a lot of $ and hopes invested in an orphaned foal, so they want to make sure that the foal is getting all the milk it needs, without any competition from another baby.
However, some mares are perfectly capable of producing enough milk for two youngsters. I know a Gypsy Horse breeder who regularly uses surrogate mares, and most of them are rescued TBs or QHs, often former racers. To excel as a surrogate, they only need to be healthy, devoted moms, and the TBs are so sweet.
She had a surrogate who (and this was unusual) rejected her new foal, and nothing she tried could get the mare to settle down. After milking the mare to make sure the colt got his colostrum, she decided to introduce him to another mare who had just foaled a colt the day before. The 'new' mom (a TB) accepted the rejected foal, and placidly raised two colts, both sturdy Gypsies who flourished as 'brothers.' But that mare had so much milk that I remembered that she would dribble milk when the boys weren't latched on.

Bay filly, Langfuhr - Monocle. @ Shamrock. Noted because Monocle is by Lord Avie, and looks a great deal like him. And that pleases me. :-)

New Member, so I hope this is the correct place to post a picture of my Coil colt by a Good Journey mare at about 6 weeks old. Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to attach a picture. Please help.

Hi and welcome, and this would be the right place to post your picture. What I do is upload my picture to either Facebook or Photobucket. I copy the image web address and click reply on here. Above the reply box is the box Img. Click on that and paste the image address in between what pops up and you're all set!
