Sad news. The smaller filly has died. She became a dummy foal and had to be euthanized.

Oh, so sorry about that. Very sad, indeed. R. I. P.

Me too!
And, another fan of the Union Rags foals...they are just gorgeous. I'd love to see a pic of him as a foal now to compare. Have to go find one. Don't worry other foals...I love you all!
Summer Bird - so sorry to hear this news. I found out the mare at my h/j barn where I take lessons lost her foal too. I was so excited, b/c it would be the first time (other than meeting Dray's fillies) that I'd be around a wee one. It's hard isn't it? So, big hugs to you.
I'm not very familar with breeding terms; can you tell me what a dummy foal is? If it is too emotional right now and/or I don't need to know, that's perfectly ok.

I'm sorry to read about the loss of the littlest twin, SB. I know you guys did the best you could for her.
The one good thing that may come out of this is that the mare will now have more milk and energy for the remaining foal. Hope she thrives.

looking for more information, but the article says that a lot of the time, the foal can be treated and saved. what i didn't understand was what symptoms would have to be present for that to not be an option? is it just too costly for something that might not work?serenassong wrote:http://www.thehorse.com/articles/26863/ ... t-syndrome

Thank you everyone for the kind words. The filly was a red bag delivery, but i don't know exactly what symptoms she had when she died. She was at the vet clinic and the mare doesn't belong to me, she belongs to the college. All I can think of is that she could have had a serious infection, but I don't know.

From what I read in the article, sometimes the organ damage is so great, that the foal will not survive. Also, SB said it was a red bag delivery, so the little one was doubly compromised- since most vets agree that both problems can cause a lack of oxygen. The neurological problems may have also been so great, that it was not compatible with life- and was kinder to let the foal not suffer a miserable and painful life. Not an expert, but that is what I got from it.sweettalk wrote:looking for more information, but the article says that a lot of the time, the foal can be treated and saved. what i didn't understand was what symptoms would have to be present for that to not be an option? is it just too costly for something that might not work?serenassong wrote:http://www.thehorse.com/articles/26863/ ... t-syndrome
