I think it might be partly due to how he's standing. He looks different in this pic (although you can't see his pasterns too well for the snow).

Hard to say if there are goggles, maybe he'll stay black.

RE: Night Magic x Deep Impact colt:

Not much bone on that baby. Don't know if it's only me, but those are some spindly legs. :o

How many mares did he breed last year?

Wow, I didn't realize he (Curlin) only got 54 mares last year. I am worried for him with numbers like that.

Curlin hadn't done much as a sire until Palace Malice won the Belmont. By then, I would assume most mares would already be bred or given the year off because the foal would be late. But he has done well since then and I would expect his numbers to improve this year.

Edited to add: I know I looked at some point last year and it was like Palace Malice winning the Belmont signaled Curlin's other foals to start racing, as most of his 9 SWs last year, came after the Belmont.

I just read that Willis Horton's mare Private Pursuit had a colt foal by Curlin recently. No pics though.

Ah, here it is:
Horton has two broodmares: Private Pursuit, who recently foaled a Curlin colt and will be bred back to Grade 1 winner Take Charge Indy, and Pleasant Song, a daughter of Unbridled’s Song who will soon produce a Mineshaft foal and will be bred this year to champion sprinter Midnight Lute. The horses are boarded in Kentucky.

They did all seem to start winning at once, didn't they? That was fun to watch. There was one weekend in particular where he had 5 or so winners.

And thanks for the link Ketama!

Yeah, that could be. Guess it's just something to keep an eye on as this one grows up...

LOL, you're a couple of days old and someone takes you out of your warm stall and puts you on slippery snow so you brace your legs until you get your bearings... :o

That's what foal pasterns look like. They're just in an awkward position in that first photo.

Hey look, a Curlin! The caption merely said it was a half brother to a City Zip, but after some determined digging, I'm pretty sure the mare is Seattle Society (o/o G2W Westerly Breeze). Maybe this will trigger all the other Curlins to be born. ;)

Now that's a mating I don't like to see. We adopted a Basset Hound once who was the accidental offsrping of a brother & sister, and that poor hound had more problems than I could list.

Carefully done, you can try it. If you are fairly familiar with the gene pool and have an idea of the pluses and minuses of that particular gene pool, you can give it a shot. The good will outweigh the bad or the other way around. This foal looks quite healthy.
Give me that short lead, give me that win by a nose, get them all home safely!

OK, I did it. They haven't made a decision yet on whether she'll be bred this year. I assume she can get into most any book they want if they decide to go ahead.
