I'm pretty sure I drove by Calumet when I was in Kentucky last May, and I think I saw Producer out in a paddock. It may have been Channel Cat but I'm pretty sure the horse had a blaze.
I sure wish we could visit...

We used to drive by often when I had my dr appointments in Lexington.. it's not really "on the way", but my mom made sure we took detours to brighten my days, past all and every horse farm she could think of. Cancer sucks. Horses rock.
When we pulled over on the side of Versailles Rd, due to my nausea so I could step out and get some fresh air/vomit off the side of the road, it was often okay and my mom used it as an excuse to take a good look over Calumet, however, the last time we stopped nearby (pretty close to the gate), a guy, assumingly someone who worked there, came and asked us to leave (understandably so).
Calumet is a huge area, beautiful and wellkept (at least around the area you can see passing by on Versailles), it really is a shame they don't take visitors unless you want to view a stallion.

When they started buying some obscure turf/stamina oriented stallions 10 years ago, it really looked like they were all in on an interesting experiment. But then they priced the stallions way too high, and any mares the stallions did get were bad Calumet mares… then would sell the resulting offspring or the mares in foal without reserve for 4 figures at Keeneland.
They still race a lot of horses, with the best either bought from yearling or two year old sales, or homebreds by higher class stallions. Their racing operation reached it’s peak number wise in 2019, with numbers sliding down since. I really do wonder how many horses are on that farm. There can’t be more than a couple dozen broodmares.

And the mares that RNA, magically turn up in kill pens. Its happened multiple times. They dump their 20yo mares in sales cause god forbid they take care of the broodmares.Northport wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 2:32 pmWhen they started buying some obscure turf/stamina oriented stallions 10 years ago, it really looked like they were all in on an interesting experiment. It's not a surprise that Brad Kelley has been noted multiple times as an "eclectic" and "private" individual. Not that many in racing journalism have the spine to ask hard questions, but it would be really interesting if someone sat down to interview him and asked what the whole thesis with the modern Calumet is.Flanders wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 2:52 pmAnd the mares that RNA, magically turn up in kill pens. On the loosely related thread of racing media, Steve Byk's constant mocking of fans being upset with 3 year olds being retired got a nice correction by guest Johnny D yesterday. Just because we got lucky this year, does not mean that it isn't a problem that has done serious damage to the sport in the last 20 years.

Classic Causeway - $6,500
While he wasn't the most consistent horse, partially due to his campaigning IMO, $6.5k for a son of Giant's Causeway who was a G1 winner on turf and G2 winner/G1 placed on dirt certainly isn't a bad deal. I'd throw a mare his way if I were a breeder.

Good luck to him, one of my favorites to follow after the Derby in 2022.Nenikikamen23 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 4:56 pm Classic Causeway - $6,500

Othybat posted those stud fees yesterday on the previous page. I couldn't find him or Eclipticalspraline (who is as far as I'm aware maybe the last or at least one of the last Exclusive Native representatives at stud in the US, maybe world).Nenikikamen23 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 5:38 pmOn that note, does anyone know where Madefromlucky has gone?Nenikikamen23 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 5:15 pm Northview Stallion Station

I quite liked Madefromlucky, so I'll be checking daily to see if I can figure out where he's gone. I wasn't aware Eclipticalspraline was still standing either. I wish more farms would just post when a stallion has moved on, been pensioned, etc. so fans weren't left wondering. I know it's not information we're owed, but the sport is built off the backs of horses. They shouldn't be able to just disappear

Stallions are different than broodmares. My opinion is we are owed the information with stallions. Stallions are advertised, they are the focus of the breeding industry(sales focus on stallions #, sire list focus on stallion #, etc.), most farms allow fans to see them, and most are retired early because they can't wait to breed them. I get that it should be the buying farm that releases the information but if they are selling them overseas then yes it falls on the seller.Nenikikamen23 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 6:45 pmI quite liked Madefromlucky, so I'll be checking daily to see if I can figure out where he's gone.
