I was not surprised.
Rey de Oro is a second crop sire whose babies started to race last year.
True his 2yos were very disappointing last year and his number of mares covered plummeted this spring accordingly.
Breeders don’t like stallions who lack in precociousness.
But his first crop started to do somewhat better turning to 3yo.
He has not sired any graded winner, but you can't forget the fact that his 3yos hit the board in both the Japanese Derby and the Kikuka Sho.
Even if Rey de Oro has not lived up to the expectation, Shadai can still hope that he is either a classic-type or a better-with-ages stallion.
Also, his result in the 2024 JRHA Select Sale was still not so bad.
And, in addition to those, Rey de Oro is a Shadai's homebred and their beloved Japanese Derby winner.
Overall, it's not surprising that Shadai gives him another year or two before really giving up on him.
--> let's see.

Any idea why HRC would be so low? He hasn't had his first runners yet. Could that be it?

I would guess so. It’s the notoriously hard-to-fill book of a third year stallion, plus most American stallion import numbers do fall off at some point - until they prove themselves. A bargain fee could get some more feet in door. Heavens knows that Shadai has no shortage of other options.

Calumet is a mystery. I know they've been trying to offload Kitten for a while. I feel bad for the stallions who go to Calumet, they never get a real chance at succeeding. Due to either not covering or barely covering mares.
Bal a Bali was sold, here's an article though it's in Portuguese :

I really don't know anything about Calumet's current ownership/management, but their roster is pretty sad for such a storied name.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.
