The usually very polite and demure Aidan O’Brien is not happy

He hasn’t had a Melbourne Cup runner since 2019 because of the strict vetting protocols. After this fiasco, I think Racing Victoria just assured that Ballydoyle won’t ever send another runner for the Cup.

four if you count the ones that happened during workouts prior to the race. that's the thing, if he is under more scrutiny than other trainers... that's just because he's had 4 horses die there in a span of 3 years just during festival time.

Oof, yeah that tracks, I thought there were more but couldn’t find others related to the running of the race itself. He should just be grateful they haven’t banned him outright. No one person is above the health of an entire country’s industry.

The Australian vets found two problems in two separate legs on Jan Bruegel. They could have transformed into something serious on Tuesday and God forbid they ever do and it was a case of over-cautiousness, but this is a horse’s life we are talking about. That’s worth remembering.

Leading equine vet explains the Jan Brueghel scanning procedure
https://www.rsn.net.au/news/rsn-podcast ... ure/671650
basically:
scans showed shadows in 2 legs. those shadows could be precursors to fractures. and in the vet's words, "if the trainer actually knew his horses we wouldn't have to use Anthony van Dyck as an example".

On Nick Luck’s podcast today, it was mentioned that one of the main discoveries during the big investigation of Melbourne Cup fatalities was that fewer horses break down when the turf is watered until it is listed as good or softer. However, international shippers do considerably better when the turf is soft. Of the 40ish recommendations made by the investigators, that one specifically was fought by local trainers and owners. It ended up being only one of the 2-3 recommendations that were not put into action.

1st Knight's Choice(AUS)
2nd Warp Speed(JPN)
3rd Okita Soushi(IRE)
Congrats to Knight's Choice who pulled off a major upset!!!!
No Japanese but his connections could have imagined Warp Speed would run that well!!
And I'm happy that our Shinsen-gumi friend Okita Soushi came in 3rd.
