I was out at Grand Teton/Yellowstone last September and was hoping to see her. I had breakfast at the Bunnery in Jackson, and was seated next to a huge picture of her with the four cubs in-tow. I lost count how many people came up to take a picture of that picture because she was literally THAT much of an icon out there. What a damn shame to lose her that way.brunanas wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2024 3:38 pm not a racehorse obviously but i think she deserves a mention everywhere. It is tragic that a bear who had managed to live so long, and be such a successful mother, died because of some dam car. So unfair.

I was in the area in mid-September and we watched the area where she had been seen, fruitlessly--had no idea that she had been killed. Maybe she got too casual with traffic, but I'm very upset as well.Psychotic Parakeet wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2024 8:12 pmI was out at Grand Teton/Yellowstone last September and was hoping to see her. That is how she managed to get quite a few of her cubs to survive. She was habituated to roaming close to the roadways as a "safety corridor" because it kept away the male bears from attacking her or the cubs in-tow. I just feel sick that we will never know how long she could have lived without human interference.

If I'm reading you correctly, her use of human interference---the roadway---helped keep her and a fair number of her cubs alive for some time. Her death is regrettable, but probably slowed reflexes and impaired senses from old age (brown bears live to an average of about 25 years) played a role in her getting hit since she was clearly road-savvy.Psychotic Parakeet wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 1:45 pmThat is how she managed to get quite a few of her cubs to survive. Yes, on the aspect that our persistent presence scared away other bears. The majority of them are wary of people, as well as the irritable noise made from vehicles on the roadways. She took advantage of that. The area she was hit was south of Jackson, and it is pretty much nearly impossible to drive that area without your brights on because it is practically pitch black out there after the sun goes down. They have speed limit signs that have a different speed posted for day and night driving. I think it was 55 mph daytime and 45 mph at night. That is still fast enough to kill anything great or small though along the corridor between the cities and the national parks.mahubah wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 4:26 pm

True that. But the old girl was probably pretty adept at timing such things if she'd been hanging around the roadway that long. I understand they do know who it was that hit her, so if he was speeding or DUI, he'll get what's coming to him. Otherwise, just an unfortunate accident, though it is a very good illustration of one reason why I avoid night driving whenever possible. There are more critters on the move after dark, and hitting a deer is a significant risk around here---I've seen road-killed deer well into what passes as heavily populated areas in this rather rural burg.Psychotic Parakeet wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 7:42 pmYes, on the aspect that our persistent presence scared away other bears. I was in the area in mid-September; our van was driving to Jackson Lake Lodge and a bear was spotted to our right--it then ran towards the cross-road and we all held our breath, but it made it across. But people don't always drive sensibly. Anyway, thanks for the recognition for Bear 399. I didn't know if it was appropriate. I just felt gutted.

Yes, that is what we were told. Oddly enough as we were driving to the Jackson Lake lodge, someone spotted a bear to our right which ran right across the intersecting road--we all gasped but it made it safely across. I now wonder if that was her cub Spirit as it was along the main road which she frequented. It didn't look like a big adult bear.Psychotic Parakeet wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 1:45 pmThat is how she managed to get quite a few of her cubs to survive. I just saw this: Terri Garr passed away from Multiple Sclerosis which was diagnosed in 2002- she was 79
I really liked her acting and remember her role in "Let It Ride"-- one of the best horse racing movies ever. It was a great cast.
RIP

One of my all time favorites, it's good to hear he lived to a ripe old age at his home farm.
