A good one is worth his or her weight in gold, but it does surprise me how these mega farms with bottomless pockets can’t seem to find a decent one.

"His or her weight in gold".........That reminds me of something I've thought about for a long time now. Have any of you who are in the industry ever encountered a female farrier? I don't recall ever seeing one in any pictures or videos, but of course that doesn't mean that women in that occupation don't exist.

I've just always seen that it's such backbreaking work that requires an awful lot of physical strength, and it's hard for me to imagine that there's many women who would want to take up that line of work. Thanks for the feedback!

Our beloved farrier (who is fantastic) has had a girl assistant/apprentice for at least the last 3 years, so it’s not a novelty at our farm anymore. I’ve seen a couple others on instagram reels, but not sure where they are based.

It’s definitely a gruelling job, and you have to be strong and flexible, but I can’t see why a determined gal cant do it. I’m only one of two girls in Canada who does my specific job, because it is so physically demanding, but all it takes is one girl seeing another do it before more and more follow suit.

Thanks. I certainly didn't mean to suggest that women CAN'T do the job. Given very good physical condition and the right mindset, there's no reason why a woman shouldn't be able to. I just know that I've never actually seen one on the job, and just watching those "guys" doing their thing just makes my whole body ache somethin' fierce! I'm too old now, of course, but I can't remember a time in my life that I would have taken on work like that day in and day out!

By the way, even though I'm pretty ignorant about it, farrier science has always completely fascinated me. I just don't see how the really good ones can successfully deal with the complex problems that must arise when dealing with a horse's feet! It just amazes me!

Scott Morrison, who’s one of the best farriers in the world has a female farrier that trims and shoes horses on her own. Also the farrier for Dixiana has a female assistant too.

Sure hope they get her hooves straightened out quick, those cracks look deep and the one on the left looks like it’s already cracking all the way up.

Finding a good farrier must be the proverbial unicorn in the equine world. Someone posted an updated photo of Justify the other day, and his front hooves were pretty gnarly.

The issue with Justify is he has shit feet, they've always looked bad in some form or another. Now it's probably a mix of him and a crud farrier. One would thing for how much these horses make a good farrier would be used

If a triple crown wasn’t on the line I don’t think he would’ve ran in the Preakness, any other horse would’ve been rested or retired.

I worry about him as poor hooves on tiny feet supporting a massive body is a recipe for laminitis, even without mentioning the intense workload Coolmore has him under. But isn’t it grand that a breed shaping sire has those hooves?

I overheard a breeder at a well known large farm say to someone when discussing a horse with physical issues “ If he can walk he can breed.” Sad this is the prevailing attitude where greed knows no bounds,
