Tachyon in doing research I have noticed that there are many stallions in Japan that retire to farms like Lex Stud and Yushun that, while they have respectable records, they have only really won G3s, G2s, and minor stakes and don't have overly fashionable pedigrees. Sometimes they are GSWs on the NAR circuit and therefore not recognized as GSWs internationally. An example of this are Nishiken Mononofu and Sound Sky.

What motivates farms to stand these guys? Not that I'm against it, but Japan doesn't seem to have as many stallions like that go to stud as North America does (I am aware the size of the country and industry is a factor in this).

Also I found this website:
https://www5b.biglobe.ne.jp/~louis/Farm ... ation.html

And what appears to be Yushun's official website.

Wow, I love that Honor Code was bred to 152 mares....I’m excited that the Japanese are confident they can unlock him as a sire

https://www.yushun-company.com/stallion/
According to the Jockey Club, 867 stallions covered 26,597 mares in North America during 2023.
https://www.jockeyclub.com/Default.asp? ... story=1434

According to JAIRS, 262 stallions covered 12,441 mares in Japan during 2023.
https://www.jairs.jp/contents/archives/2023/45.html <--- please read this through translator if you like

In 2023,

Average number of mares covered by stallions in North America = 26597/867 = 30.7
Average number of mares covered by stallions in Japan = 12441/262 = 47.5

So I wouldn't think that Japan has too many stallions.
And both Nishiken Mononofu (Jpn1 JBC Sprint winner sired by G1 February Stakes winner Meisho Bowler) and Sound Sky (Jpn1 Zen-nippon Nisai Yushun winner sired by G1 Japanese Derby winner Deep Sky) were good horses to be stallions.

Japanese breeders need the best dirt pedigree that may be good on turf as well! :D ;)
Best of luck to him!

I think he could be that one if they breed him to the right mares - and he’s actually a good turf sire

Thank you so much!!

It might be because they are the only successor to their sire.

Like there was a project for Quite Fine to be a stud because he was the only descendant stallion left from Tokai Teio.

Same thing with Ginza Green Grass from Mejiro McQueen.

I really want them to give a chance to Crown Pride once he retires because he might be the only option left to keep the Special Week line alive.

So yeah, they give chance to studs sometimes because of their pedigree and I think it's cool.

Nishiken Mononofu is from the Taiki Shuttle line and it's in danger as well.

Special Week still has a very strong fan's following in Japan!
Alas he was a filly sire.
I will be VERY shocked if Crown Pride won't be a stallion in Japan, too.
But it will basically be up to Teruya Yoshida's decision.
Fingers crossed.

I'm surprised to see Aldebaran and Squirtle Squirt are still covering mares. Too bad Animal Kingdom's support is waning.

Both Aldebaran(USA) and Squirtle Squirt(USA) are 26 years old and the oldest stallions standing at studs in Japan right now.
I do remember their G1 success at the US racetracks vividly but time really flies.
Aldebaran is at JBBA Shichinohe and Squirtle Squirt is at JBBA Kyushu.
Both have had respectable records at studs and some breeders still want to send mares to these veteran stallions.

Squirtle Squirt, represented by the popular & uniquely-named female sprinter Yoka Yoka(JPN), is known as the stallion who sired his first graded stakes winner from his 15th crop generation, which is the longest generation record to sire a graded stakes winner in Japan.

-- Introduction to Squirtle Squirt (in Japanese) (including the replay of 2001 BC Sprint)

Aldebaran was the last G1 winner sired by the great Mr. Prospector(USA).
Now I'm wondering if Aldebaran is the only Mr. P's son who is still standing at stud in the world.
But I'm not sure about it...

I think it'd be nice for Animal Kingdom to be pensioned and brought back to the US.

He's only 16 years old (right?) He doesn't seem like the kind of stallion that the Japanese would be wanting to keep there and care for forthe rest of his days, like they did for Forty Niner (died at 34). They didn't even keep Charismatic or Silver Charm after they were pensioned , though those two may have been a contractual thing with the Lewis Estate.

I agree that it would be neat if Barry Irwin and the Team Valor people could work out a deal to repatriate Animal Kingdom and bring him back home, and maybe not pension him here right away. At only 16, it might be worth it to let him have a season or three here before pulling the pension trigger. Of course, we were not informed about why he only got 9 mares. If he has fertility issues, then that sort of kills that idea, but it's still kind of fun to muse about.

Yeah I think bringing him back to stand a little longer would be good. I think that is what's happening with Colonel John since he got back from Korea last month.

Well, that may be true, but there's some kind of reason why he only attracted 9 mares this season, whether it be fertility or something else. I'm as ignorant as anybody on this stuff, but I would have thought that, with the German influence he has, he would have been at least somewhat attractive to the Japaness breeders just on pedigree alone. And unless my memory is really failing me, he's a very handsome horse!

He's definitely a handsome horse and his stud record isn't terrible, having sired Regal Glory and Oleksandra. I would hope that if he is brought back to the States he could stand a few more seasons.
