Since I went to the Derby last year I plan on going to a different race meet in 2025. I'm also considering just taking off back to KY for a weekend for fall farm tours this November. I want to go to a farm I didn't get to back in May, like maybe Airdrie so I can see Mage, but I also really hope to see War of Will out in his paddock at Claiborne. I have a better chance of that if I go in the fall and choose an afternoon tour, I think.
Anyway this is an interesting move as far as the Virginia Derby moving to dirt. Why not keep it turf? It's not like horses who have primarily run on turf never end up in a Derby Trail dirt race or a Triple Crown Classic race itself.

You could go during the Keeneland meet but that is October, if you wanted to hit a different track and go in the fall.Mylute wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2024 8:20 am Since I went to the Derby last year I plan on going to a different race meet in 2025. The turf course wouldn't be grown at that point in the year. I only know that cause I saw an article earlier this year of them doing their annual burn of the turf course. I went and looked for the article, to see when it was and it was March 20th, pics in the article. https://www.wric.com/news/local-news/ph ... turf-burn/
I would guess they are also trying to expand the VA Racing program, maybe get some Graded dirt races eventually. I don't have a problem with them expanding racing in Virginia, expanding racing is a good thing. I just think its messed up that they added a point penalty for short fields but then also added another race at their own track to take away from other fields.

Look at it this way. If Santa Anita wanted to, they could move their Derby to the turf. The fields in recent years have been short and lacked depth. On the turf, you’d get a bigger, deeper field that would be a much better betting race. The points would end up being removed, however and in time the purse reduced. It would end up the California Derby so. CA style. Maybe CDI buys Hialeah and resurrects the Flamingo and runs it on turf. I was there a couple of years ago. The main track is a weed garden but the turf courses look good. They can run it the same day as the Florida Derby. Who would get the better field?Flanders wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2024 9:10 amYou could go during the Keeneland meet but that is October, if you wanted to hit a different track and go in the fall.Mylute wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2024 8:20 am Since I went to the Derby last year I plan on going to a different race meet in 2025. They already owned a Florida racetrack, we all know how that went.Curtis wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2024 12:04 pmLook at it this way. If Santa Anita wanted to, they could move their Derby to the turf.
