I looked, albeit not very hard, and didn’t see why he was never able to make it back to the track. Would love to know what ailment prevented him from going on.
He only worked once this year after whatever injury he sustained last year. They never said what the first injury was, afaik. Maybe same sort of injury? Or the exact same, unknown. ;)

Next thing we know, horses who have never stepped foot on a track are going to be going to stud due to the sire and them being a half or full to a "good horse".

Well he is sired by Justify so I am not shocked he's got soundness issues

Pharoah has 2 sons at stud in the US and neither raced

At least Justify is a soaring success of a sire. Pharaoh not so much

Would much rather have the triple crown winner who retired sound and could make more than six starts be the breed shaping sire, but life isn’t just.

Someone on Facebook just pointed out that Winstar has now restricted the ability to comment on their post about heartland and is actively deleting negative comments

I have a terrible memory but did Maclean's Music have the same uproar? He also retired off of just a maiden win.

I do not like Winstar one bit but them deleting comments to make a crappy unsound horse look better doesn't shock me at all

Instead of playing dirty like that, it would not hurt to be transparent why he was retired in the first place. It obviously won't stop negative comments, but it just feels like a knee-jerk reaction to retire solely on the basis of him being an undefeated son of Justify. Then again, Win$tar doesn't owe anyone the truth after what they did with Laoban.
I wanna do bad things with you.

He's the third son of Justify to go to stud right in the US right? Arabian Lion, Him, Verifying? Obviously City of Troy will be at stud next year, and he's the only one I'm looking forward to seeing. Be interesting if he end's up winning the Classic if Coolmore Keeps him at Ashford or Sends him back to Europe.

I think he'll stand in Ireland and stay there. However in the past the 2 horses they had that ran well in the Classic, only stood their first year in Ireland and then moved to Ashford. So they could continue that trend but I feel like City of Troy is different. They want to get that Justify connection in Ireland for the European breeders. I don't think Coolmore cares where he stands, as they'll ship nearly ssssstheir entire broodmare band to a stallion as we've seen with Justify. Perhaps it will do more with where he can command the highest stud fee and get the most mares.

This brings a question from me, what kind of fee will Europe take for a first year stallion? I know Frankel started at 125k, Giant's Causeway and Dubai Millennium at 100k but those are the only 3 I can think of. Giant's Causeway stood for 135k when he came to the US his 2nd year. The US just accepts whatever for first year stallions. So if they could somehow get breeders to use him in the US at 200k, he might start here. I feel like Europe has required a stallion to be established to get a super super high stud fee. But I also could be forgetting someone.

Heartland inbred to Storm Cat to go along with that lengthy race record, if I was breed to race I'd probably pass even if they paid me $20,000 to breed to him

I'd pass just because he's not sound and only raced once. Unsound sire and unsound son no thank you.

Not shocked he's inbred to both Storm Cat and Native Dancer. A little inbreeding doesn't hurt bit the amount that's seen in some Thoroughbreds is gross

That sireline's unsoundness is every stallion back to Northern Dancer. Scat Daddy never ran again after the Kentucky Derby. Johannesburg made it to June of his 3yo year. Hennessy never ran after 2. Storm Cat missed almost his entire 3yo year and they couldn't get him to the races at 4, though they tried. Storm Bird raced once at 3. ND was injured in July of his 3yo year, though he had 18 races by that point.

What if it was Phalaris that started it all? Yes he raced 30 times but he is the male line ancestor of all the Darley Arabian stallions. Of his sons that I can find race records for, they are almost all exceptionally low for that time and they raced between the War times so it wasn't that. Then every horse is inbred to him countless times over.

To those who think that geldings winning big races are what is undermining the diversity and strength of the breed, I present - Heartland.
