I understand Brown isn’t going to win too many popularity contests but the crux of what he’s saying is true. If I am a racing secretary and the racing association allocates 1M with the instructions to write a turf stake for fillies and mares and get it G1 status as soon as possible, I’m writing it at 9f. I’m a minimalist. If I were King of the Breeder’s Cup, I’d eliminate the F&M Turf and Sprint. Most likely the Dirt Mile. There are probably other areas of fat to trim, but that means I’d have to look them up. The best U.S. based female turf marathoner has entered the BC Turf even when the F&M version has been 11f. Without a fixed distance, the race isn’t necessary and there is no proper fixed distance for it.

I do tend to agree that there is a noticeable lack of G1 turf races for females at the mile or shorter distance, but I suppose there's bigger problems to fix.

I would not be shocked to find out that the number of prominent owners using horse racing as a tax write-off outnumbers those who are in the game trying to make a profit.

Designating G1 races isn’t the answer. The reason is there aren’t enough suitable horses. A race track can do things—namely purse money—to attract G1 types. When races were first graded, neither the KY Oaks or the Whitney were G1’s. Hard to fathom now. As CD promoted the Oaks outside of KY and Saratoga became a meet to target for horses other than the ages of 2&3, the fields got better and better and they were elevated. When races began being graded Del Mar had no G1’s and while many may argue it doesn’t in reality have any now, there was a peak period when the racing at Del Mar and Saratoga were very comparable.

Listening to Len Green’s annual appearance on Steve Byk’s show during tax season definitely points to that. It’s wild what a good accountant can dig out and write off.

As for Casse on Saturday, in the 5th race, 13 are entered and he has 8 of 'em. Oddly, he doesn't have the first or second betting favorite on the morning line.

Then in the 9th, 14 are entered and he has 7 of them. 10/1 on the morning line is his shortest price!
