Morning line favorite Adare Manor is scratched.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Yes she tied up after a recent gallop. Needs time to recover. See Runs like a Girl thread.

So now the favorite most likely will be a horse making his second start around two-turns and his first beyond 8.5f. 1M doesn’t buy what it used to.

This has to be the least accomplished Pacific Classic field in many years if not ever! There's now only one GI winner in the race and the only horse that has won at the distance, and that's There Goes Harvard, and he's 15/1 on the morning line! His GI at 10f came in the now GII Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita two years ago, and he was 9/1 in that one!

I have been a bit of a fan of Reincarnate, so I'll probably be rooting for him, but the over-all quality here is really quite meh!

Buzz out here is There Goes Harvard loves a distance. This’ll leg him right up to step up in class and invade Ferndale next weekend for the Humboldt Marathon. I think after the big mare tied up, Baffert is hoping to reincarnate General Challenge.

Let's all welcome our newest G1 winner... [reads smudged writing on hand] Mixto? 1-for-13 lifetime and last seen losing a race at Pleasanton?

That race was, as the kids say, not it.

CA handicap division is ripe for the taking… any of the top 3-year-olds should have run in that race.

There was something that happened in that race regarding the jockeys that bothers me and I thought I'd ask about it here. Baffert entered two horses at the official draw and named his main guy J J Hernandez to ride Adare Manor and Kazushi Kimura to ride Reincarnate. That was completely fine with no questions about it.

Then, however many days after the official entries were drawn, he decided that Adare Manor had to be scratched........because she tied up, or he wasn't happy with her pre-race training, or whatever. Anyway, he then pulled Kimura off of Reincarnate and replaced him with his big gun Hernandez who was all of a sudden freed up.

Maybe I'm misinformed, but I thought a move like this in a circumstance like this was "against the rules" after entries were officially drawn. I thought there was a rule in place to protect jockeys from connections making a change like this just a day or two before a race is run. When you officially enter a horse and name a rider, that's pretty much set in stone, unless the horse is scratched or the jockey gets ill or injured. You can't just yank a rider off a horse and replace him or her with somebody you like better just because he or she suddenly becomes "open".

Am I wrong about this?

The switch was OK'd by the stewards, I think that is the only way it is allowed after entries are drawn.

Surely, the stewards must have consulted Kimura and his agent and gotten an OK from them before ruling on it. Baffert has used Kimura on a few occasions in the past, and maybe Kimura didn't want to risk losing opportunities to ride for somebody that important, so he just went along with the request. It still just doesn't seem right.

idk there is an article on HRN about it but doesn't say anything except Baffert got the okay from the stewards. I would assume Baffert would have talked to Kimura and his agent first.

Man that was sad. I've always liked Mixto but not for the Pacific Classic. It's a reflection of the West coast racing scene as a whole.

Cant wait to see the spin this gets on Steve Byk’s show. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of the interviews, but he has a mocking way of addressing fans’ concerns about the way 90% of the top 3 year olds get retired. This is what happens when everyone with a G1 win retires before they turn 4. You get Mixto winning the Pacific Classic.

At least you know Calumet won’t be rushing him off to cover their usual sold out book of -checks notes- 3 mares.

I get why they took a shot with Sierra Leone in the Travers but with the BC at Del Mar, the Pacific Classic would have been an ideal spot for him in many ways. If Baffert had a 3yo that was upright and didn’t need a race he would have put one in. Not a 3yo but something must have went sideways with Express Train. Even in his diminished state he’d have been tough in there.
