If you google the original Whistlejacket, he clearly has palomino coloring. (I have a image somewhere, but I can't manage to paste it.)

Definitely a flaxen chestnut. Also a painting horse lovers should see in person if they can, IMO (it's in the National Gallery in London). Prints/reproductions really don't capture its majesty.

Been lucky enough to have seen it several times, it is just stunning in person. When I visit the National Gallery, Turner's "Fighting Temeraire" and "Whistlejacket" come first, then I just browse.

I saw "Whistlejacket" when it was on loan to the Kimball Art Gallery for a Stubbs exhibition. It's huge and when you walked in the gallery, it was at the other end taking up the whole wall. Absolutely amazing.
