Yeah sure and if god forbid something happens to the horse, it will be Mott's fault. Guy is an idiot. If the horse got hurt it was when Dawson forced Reed to race him in the Clark after running a decent 4th in the BC Classic. But he was working normally right up to the Alysheba, its possible it just happened in that race(I mean times compared to how he had always worked).

If true shame, shame on him!

Hope that even if Richie never wins another race he ends up in a home that would spoil him rotten. I still think gelding him and giving him to the Kentucky Horse Park is the way to go.

Technically he’s not a champion but he’d be a hit with tourists, and get the best care. (Plus I would advocate strongly for Breyer to make him and Accelerate models for BreyerFest).

Very on brand for the management of Rich Strike so far. Send him back to Saratoga, enter him in the November Breeding Stock Sale, complain on Facbook about the 2022 Lukas Classic. The possibilities are endless.

Anything except just retire him with a realistic stallion deal.

I'd also be fine with that. I know Calumet is just Brad Kelley's tax write off, but I wonder if they've made any effort to buy and stand him. They've stood far more bizarre stallions before, and he is a homebred Derby winner.

His pedigree has a bit too much rainbow and banjo paddling going on to be appealing. Add on the fact he is ill-tempered, so that would not work as an attractive option for tourist-y places like Old Friends and Kentucky Horse Park. It would be a better option to geld him and let him be a horse for the rest of his days.

I suppose Chile might be a possibility for buying him as a stallion; Smart Strike's Lookin At Lucky was a two-time champion sire there and is making some headway on the broodmare sire charts. Lucky's getting a little long in the tooth, so someone could be interested in seeing if lightning strikes twice. On the other hand, Lucky was a much better, sounder racehorse with a better damline, and Chile doesn't have a huge breeding population; folks there may figure they've got enough of that bloodline there already.

His pedigree alone makes me want to see him gelded

Stupid question here: how ill-tempered is he? I know he was biting the pony and outrider post-Derby but was that just super-hyped by the crowd etc.? Just asking, never heard Mott or anyone else say anything like that.

Also, KHP dealt with Forego and John Henry so they have experience with cranky horses.

What you have is a claiming horse.

The horse rose to the occasion and won a big race, which made the owner’s brain see dollar signs. Strike while the iron is hot - he should have made a deal after that race.

The horse needs to be retired. Good luck getting much for him now. The $2.5 million in purses for a $30,000 claim - that’s something.

I said at the time they should have sold him before the roses wilted.
