The one that kind of surprises me by showing up on this listing is Cape Blanco. He topped the RMB list in his first year at stud, 2012, which is only 12 years ago, and he's like 100% a turf horse. American breeders don't ever flock to turf stallions, so Ashford must have really loaded him with support from their own broodmare inventory in that first year. I remember thinking it was unusual for Coolmore to stand a multiple GI turf winner by Galileo in America.

The other thing I remember about Cape Blanco was that he won the GI Man O War, the GI Arlington Million, and the GI Joe Hirsh Turf Classic here in America while shipping back and forth across the pond for all three victories. People found that pretty remarkable. Maybe it wouldn't be so much now, but back then, it was at least notable.

Coolmore rarely supports their first year stallions. I think this might have been a perfect combination of 4 things. I believe he was the first G1 winner by Galileo to stand in the US. He was not a pure 12f turf horse, having won two GSW as a 2yo at 7f and was a G1SW at 10 to 12f. His fee was pretty cheap at 17.5k. Then the biggest one, imo, Medaglia d'Oro and Kitten's Joy. Since most mares are booked the previous fall, so fall 2011, both MDO and Kitten's Joy were relatively new stallions. MDO first crop would have been 5yos, he finished 2011 in 9th place on the General Sires List. Kitten's Joy was just getting started, with his first crop only being 3yos. He still finished 2011 in 10th place on the General Sire List. I feel like that Sadler's Wells line connection made Cape Blanco attractive to a lot of breeders because of the success MDO and Kitten's Joy were having. He was the cheap option at 17.5k, compared to their 50k(KJ) and 100k(MDO) stud fees. Coolmore didn't have much faith in him and he is one of the rare stallions that was sold on before his first crop hit the track. He went to Japan in November 2014 when his first crop was yearlings.

Yeah, I was going to say... Coolmore doesn't support their own stallions until they have proved that they can consistently get 5+ G1 winners a season - or unless they've won an American Triple Crown. It's entirely on outside breeders to make or break their stallions.

— surprised Justify's number was lower than 300. but why the fuck is Practical Joke's that high? i don't think he has produced anything (in the US) other than the deceased Practical Move and Chocolate Gelato who didn't keep her 2yo form. i don't understand why so many people would breed to him at his current fee;
— NO WAY Mo Town stays another year. like absolutely no way;
— how is Mendelssohn still getting over 100 mares?;
— i know they basically don't ever sell freshmen sires, but unless Maximum Security gets a breakout runner, idk if he stays another year. his sales are absolutely horrible, his numbers keep plummeting, etc etc. i guess you could say the same for Echo Town.

Lane's End:
— unless Daredevil gets good runners again, i see him on the chopping board this time next year;
— if they keep Tonalist they'll cement themselves as the most patient and forgiving farm ever. same for Union Rags unfortunately.

WinStar:
— BIG yikes for Audible. but if they kept Always Dreaming for that long... they won't ditch a son of Into Mischief so soon, right?;
— i know they have space but i'll be surprised if they keep "wasting" hay on Good Samaritan and Promises Fulfilled;
— to those curious, Improbable had bred 11 mares before he died (a month into the breeding season).

Practical Joke is #10 on the general sires list, so he’s doing okay. His AEI is 1.63 vs a CI of 1.40, so he moves his mares up a bit. He’s had 9 G1Ws in his career so far, although 7 were in Chile.

ETA: He had a new G1W on 3 August: Ways and Means won the Test S (G1).

i'd guess it's a "normal" drop for 2nd year sires. his foals are just weanlings, i don't think it's possible to judge now, let alone when the mares in general were being booked and bred. his mare i/f average last year was $119,500 which is good for his fee.

I'm really happy to see that Jackie's Warrior held his own this year in his 2nd season, only dropping three from his inaugural number. Shouldn't that mean that his first foals are at least looking good and are drawing some word-of-mouth activity? I guess any definitive conclusions can't be drawn until the yearling sales in 2025, but I sure hope he does well. I really love that guy!

his LF% has gone down quite a bit since he entered stud, but idk if i'd consider him "not very fertile". he had 55% LF in 2022 (83/150), 58% in 2021 (109/189) and 72% in 2020 (159/221). the thing is you don't know how many mares were barren and how many aborted/lost their foals. now this year not all LF reports are out yet but he's sitting at 36% (47/131).
