Silly me, I had forgotten what a full house looked like in SoCal, standing room only!
And everybody so well dressed, congrats.
Yes, Baffert won the first 2YO maiden race of the season.
Pick six pool >>>$400,000 no jackpot, just an old fashioned format.
Enjoy

Baffert won the MSW for fillies on Sunday with Casalu--a $700,00 plus daughter of. . Caracaro? As usual, broke fast, led, challenged, rebroke and improved positiion. Pegram colors.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

i think caracaro is quietly turning out to be a decent stallion. (edit; well, he's off to a good start anyway, i'm getting ahead of myself with my optimism for him lol).
in less fun news, there was a fatality already. hope that's not an omen.

On Saturday Todd Schrupp was saying how great it was that there had been no safety issues and how important safety was to everyone--with two or three races left! Of course in the nightcap a horse clipped heels and fell in the stretch. Fortunately both horse and rider in that incident were okay but really, how to jinx things!

There's a common phrase used by horseplayers for time immemorial when faced with a horse that looks just unbeatable in a race, and it's "that horse would have to fall down to lose". That's an expression that I've never ever even muttered outloud before any race. It's hard to keep a common saying like that from even entering my mind, but I would never say it outloud to myself or anyone else. The reason is obvious.Diver52 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 5:30 pm On Saturday Todd Schrupp was saying how great it was that there had been no safety issues and how important safety was to everyone--with two or three races left! I often use, “The jock would have to fall off”, in a safe manner of course. I’ve seen multiple horses jump the rail, or back in the day, the hedge at Del Mar and Hollywood Park, when going on to an apparent win. One of them, Trotteur, was the last straw before Del Mar put a rail on the turf course. The rail was known as the “Trotteur Rail”. As for Trotteur, he jumped right into the photo finish mirror and was killed.Missbeholder wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 6:03 pmThere's a common phrase used by horseplayers for time immemorial when faced with a horse that looks just unbeatable in a race, and it's "that horse would have to fall down to lose". If I remember correctly, Trotteur was the only one physically injured. Fernando Toro, his jockey was able to jump clear. It was the feature race, so late in the afternoon, and the sun reflected off the mirror and spooked him. The hedge, used as a rail, was roughly hock high, if that. It wasn’t the first time it had happened but as far as I know the only fatality.sweettalk wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 7:13 pmsome of them are just determined to find a way to die. how terrible for everyone involved.Curtis wrote: ↑Mon Jul 22, 2024 6:48 pmI often use, “The jock would have to fall off”, in a safe manner of course.
