On Saturday Todd Schrupp was saying how great it was that there had been no safety issues and how important safety was to everyone--with two or three races left! Of course in the nightcap a horse clipped heels and fell in the stretch. Fortunately both horse and rider in that incident were okay but really, how to jinx things!

That's an expression that I've never ever even muttered outloud before any race. If I remember correctly, Trotteur was the only one physically injured. Fernando Toro, his jockey was able to jump clear. It was the feature race, so late in the afternoon, and the sun reflected off the mirror and spooked him. The hedge, used as a rail, was roughly hock high, if that. It wasn’t the first time it had happened but as far as I know the only fatality.
