Japanese media doesn’t linguistically differentiate between bone chips and fractures. They are both called the same thing. So if you’re just translating the news headlines and are not familiar with the actual process it ends up sounding super dramatic.
yep i just saw that kate hunter posted too, while bone chips in both legs aren't fun either it's MUCH better than what it sounded like!!
ETA: kate said she verified with the trainer, too, so that's solid confirmation.

Those reports on TOP's injury came out of multiple Japanese web news on the internet.
At first I was very shocked, too, as all reported that he had bone broken (or fractures) on his both legs.
This is a problem of our language.
But I was soon relieved to some extent as one of the web news elaborated that he had already had a surgery to remove bone chips and was sent to the farm below.

5th, 3yo colt T O PASSWORD had surgery today on fractures to both his front legs, he goes to the farm to recover, expected to take 6 months to fully heal. 
Wonder what happened to him to cause that.
