On Wednesday, in a move that could prompt concerns for the future of racing more widely, a proposal brought by councillor Xexeu Tripoli was voted on unanimously and now awaits sanction from mayor Ricardo Nunes.

Tripoli, who labelled the notion as “a historic moment for Brazil” according to local media, believes he has the support of Nunes. "So that animals that run for humans to have entertainment and make money, that no longer exists," he said.

The decision would seem set to spell the end of racing at Hipodromo de Cidade Jardim (‘Garden City’), which is overseen by the Jockey Club de Sao Paulo and is one of the two main racecourses in Brazil along with Hipodromo da Gavea in Rio de Janeiro.

first thing — no, i don't really see this passing. indirectly ending one horse sport but leaving others wouldn't end well, this would go on for years and years. if it does pass... then we'll have a problem.

racing in Brazil isn't doing well already. my state is basically just a breeding state, my local track is dead. the floods (i'd guess you guys have heard about them, if not — Brazil floods: Hundreds of Rio Grande do Sul towns under water) made it even worse, horses had to be evacuated and the track got even more fucked up than it already was. i had hopes that it'd get revamped because they're building a fancy ass apartment complex right next to it and i don't think the millionaires that are gonna live there want a rundown track for a view but at this point i'm starting to think they'll just close it. it wouldn't impact the national racing scene but it's still a track closing.
this would also obviously bring a negative impact to racing overall because the whole propaganda is "racing bad whip bad horses sad" and the people who see that don't see that this isn't (entirely) true.
and obviously Rio can't carry the whole racing industry on its' back. at all.

and no, i don't think this guy's wonderful idea includes plans to retire all the horses and give people new jobs.

none that i know of, stark. racing just isn't popular here at all especially amongst younger people who'd probably benefit more from chatrooms. if there are any they certainly aren't big/popular like this one or HRN for example.

I hate seeing any track shut down so hopefully it doesn't happen.

International racing fans will be very shocked and upset, too, if such a major track like Cidade Jardim, which has 10+ G1 events per year, is closed.

I assume that a closed race track in Brazil would end up much like a closed track in the US— bulldozed and sold to commercial developers?

and yeah, sounds like the plan would be to bulldoze and build a park or whatever.
